Rick Bragg is the author of five books including the bestsellers All Over but the Shoutin’, Ava’s Man, and The Prince of Frogtown. He was born and raised on the outskirts of Jacksonville, Alabama, the mill town that is the subject of this book. I worked in a Blue Bell plant for two summers in Red Bay, Alabama. And one summer in Belmont, Mississippi. But I was a "college boy", and just passing through the cotton mill life. Not really dedicated like the men and boys who lived it, who were proud to be part of the worthy tradition of exhausting work and unsafe working conditions. I was just passing through, on my way to an easier life, to a safer job-- to something that made me feel like a quitter because my hands became soft and my calluses went away. This book took me back there. To that town, to those times, to remembrances of those people. Rick's paen to the culture, the life, the pride and pain-- it made me emotional. I had to cry.

There stands a hundred or more silent mills across the south that, should you listen closely, echoes with the grinding of gears, the screeching of cog wheels and conveyor belts and pulleys, the growling of iron monsters ready to chew a careless arm or crush an unsuspecting hand. The people of these once noisy factories are the ghosts you'll see, their spirits still alive within the confines of the towering walls containing such noise. They are the people who Rick Bragg hail from, their veins coursing with the hearty blood of the Scotsman and Irish come over generations ago when the crystal minerals of the Appalachian mountain streams flowed all the way to the emerald Gulf shores, creating some of the whitest beaches ever. These people even now have a strength in their bodies and spirits like no other; they don't understand what quitting or giving up means, even when the thing they refuse to or can't quit is slowly killing them. These are my people too, and there isn't another of us who can tell there story as clearly, as eloquently, as Rick Bragg, all the while making me miss that red clay and the tall pines and the gentle breeze flowing through the hills of home, making me want some collards and corn bread and an afternoon of sitting on a porch shelling peas until late afternoon when the mill's whistle blows, signaling the end of a long day's shift. If you are of this ilk, read this book. And if you are not, but are curious about the ways of the South...read this book. Immerse yourself in it. It is most worthy.

Although he did not, Rick Bragg said his older brother, Sam, worked in the cotton mill. So did mine. For a long time, until he finally had to quit school, my brother would leave school early each day and walk to the cotton mill where he worked the 3 to 11 shift; then, walk home just to repeat the process the next day. I'm so thankful for my brother's sacrifice because, like Rick's, "he gave me a running start away from it all." Like so many, for my widowed mother and three children, the mill meant survival (but just that) during the Great Depression and, in The Most They Ever Had, Rick Bragg tells the mill workers' stories as only the master can.I suppose I have read just about all of Rick Bragg's books ... the bestsellers, of course, starting with All Over But The Shoutin' but also the introduction to Wooden Churches, the newspaper feature articles from Somebody Told Me (those are great), even samples in Stories From The Blue Moon Cafe, put together by his friend, Sonny Brewer. In all his writing, Rick Bragg tells the stories of people -- some of whom are like those you know, some you might not want to know, but, gawd, they are all REAL -- just ordinary people until their story is told by this gifted storyteller.

Rick Bragg has a magical way of putting words together and this book is no exception. This is a tribute to the lives of textile mill workers in Bragg's native Appalachian Alabama. As with Bragg's other books about his home, his account leaves the reader with feelings of both joy and grief for thosebrave, often doomed people, mixed with anger about the inhuman conditions they endured in order to simply put food on the table and provide a better life for their children. The book has a fairly narrow focus and probably holds more interest for regional or social historians, nevertheless is an enlightening story about an important part of life in industrial America.

Rick Bragg is a contemporary John Steinbeck. His writing reveals not only what the hard-working and under-represented people of northern Alabama have to say, but also why they say it. That has been true in both of the other Rick Bragg books I have read (Ava's Man and All Over But the Shoutin'). One of the themes of his writing seems to be to give voice to those who never had the luxury of enough time or enough resources (or both) to write about what links them to the rest of the human race. Reading his books is both illuminating, for we are so much better off for having met these people, and also a little embarrassing: if it wasn't for Rick Bragg, would I ever know about Ava, or her family, or Hootie? Would I ever really understand how the terror of the Korean War, the "forgotten war", could have led an otherwise decent man to such a painful, and short, life? His writing also demonstrates that the reason more good and decent people have not had their stories shared with a wider audience is not that they don't exist but that the rest of us are too busy with own narratives to bother paying attention to theirs. Shame on us.

Rick Bragg is one of my favorite authors. I found this book bittersweet. The real, true life stories of rural Alabamians who toiled in the dangerous, dirty and low paying textile mills. These were proud, hard working people who came largely out of the hills to work and try to give their children a better life. A hardscrabble life, filled with injuries and lung disease from breathing in the cotton of the mills. The Jacksonville Alabama mill, one of the last, closed in 2001. Bragg once again had the magic touch. He is a poignant chronicler of Southern life....

I thought I was over vampire books, and am so pleased to say how much I enjoyed loved this introduction to a new series with a vamp H, and an interesting h. She has all sorts of issues, health, family, financial and has to go on the run with the H, who is somewhat bemused by her. Their attraction is hesitant for lots of reasons, but great steamy scenes all the same. There is so much story to come, yet I wasn't left feeling as if this was incomplete either. Great writing, great story and I am ready for the next book. I want more about this world, please!

Well, another book by Steffan but with her co-author which I have never read. I am a huge fan of R.A. but I am not such a great fan of vamps, therefore, I have not read the Circle of Blood series, consequently never read her co-author. That being said, I am in somewhat of a quandary as to how to review this new one. First, it is a very different take on vamps along with all of the other demonkin & fae persons involved. I very much liked the concept of the storyline of having an underworld simmering below the surface, very clever and explained well. Well, almost, therein being the thrust of the story. I like the grab there and it does hold your interest and of course I have already ordered the 2nd book. What I find missing is Steffan's signature wit and snarky banter that I love to death, scuse the pun. It is there somewhat but not like she usually has in her own novels. I am missing that very much. I will await the 2nd book to give a full review but will give a 3.5 stars for the time being. I await the next one and BTW if this one grabs me as I think it will, I will get the Circle of Blood series as well.

OMG! The Last Vampire, Ransley, is my new favorite vampire, well, along with Xander and Snag. Rans is delectable. It was love at first sight, er read, for me. He’s a reluctant warrior in an ongoing secret supernatural battle. Zorah is everything you want in a heroine-resourceful, able to think on her feet, brave, and of course, an emerging snarky badass. She has been alone most of her life, an outsider unable to find where she fits. Although Rans has many friends, he is also an outsider, the inexplicable last of his kind. They compliment each other perfectly. I am really looking forward to the next book. With The Last Vampire and Circle of Blood I’m back into vamps in a big way.

I think whomever wrote this book should be very proud of themselves. It’s a well-written story that has great character depth and leaves lots of questions. Unfortunately, I felt almost like it was a script. I couldn’t see the houses, feel the cars, or smell the outside. I couldn’t lose myself in the story. It’s a good purchase if you’re locked in the house all weekend with nothing to do.

"The Last Vampire" takes you on a ride. And wow -- what a ride! The first book in a series (and really, what book isn't part of a series nowadays?), it ends on a cliffhanger, but it's not too annoying. It naturally leads into the next book. It's told in the first person, and the main character cum narrator is hilarious. There are plenty of laugh out loud moments. There are also a lot of big reveals that kept me tearing through the book. Warning: this book contains graphic sex and a lot of f-bombs. If that offends you, then this book isn't for you. Sex, violence, and adult language don't bother me, and it was all quite well done. Looking for a new paranormal romance? Check this one out. I was pleasantly surprised.

You have to keep spending money to get whole story. That’s unfair to readers. Charge more for the books and put them together.

I am kind of tired of vampire books, but I really liked this one. The storyline is entertaining, grabbing and holding my attention through to the end. I found it hard to put this one down! The characters (and the primaries' relationship) develop through the story, without the author just telling you what they are and why they are. Yes, it is a cliffhanger, and it is hard not to buy the next book in the series, but it is so well written and edited ( I never noticed any spelling/grammar or other errors), that I didn't hesitate to buy the next one. I recommend this one!

I’ve read lots of vampire series, but I loved that this book was something new and fresh that I hadn’t read a hundred times before. I like the world the author created and the characters. I devoured this book in a night because I just couldn’t stop reading it. It does end with a cliffhanger, but I immediately purchased book 2 and can’t want to get back in it. My only complaint is, it could’ve been a bit longer, but the price makes them affordable to purchase the next book, so really no problem there. Rans is becoming my favorite vamp and I like the fact that Zorah isn’t a weak leading lady. Interesting story and I can’t wait to see how it ends.

If you've never read Merton, this is NOT a good place to start. If you want to know about HIM, his life choices, and general philosophy, Seven Story Mountain might be a better choice.But I read this book specifically to learn about his views on Christian mystical meditation and I loved it. He synthesizes sources from the most renowned Catholic mystic thinkers and does so brilliantly.A word---I read almost everything Merton says when it comes to Christ metaphorically. So I think it's important to say that this book isn't only for Christian seekers. As a Jew, a secularist, and an naturalist, I found Merton's discussion of meditation inspiring and brilliant. When you consider the way that Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and secular contemplatives all say the same things, almost verbatim! it warms the heart and makes me wonder why we ever fight wars over water and land when, if you go deep enough, we're all sustained by the same well.

In fact I could only really enjoy it when I found my long lost paperback version. For this kind of reading, that requires going back and trinking over what you have just read, maybe adding some notes on the margins... I still prefer paper.Since it was conceived as a short manual for monks, in the first place, Editors seem to have thought necessary to add a quite long prologue _in comparison to the book itself.

I go the e-book and audio book for this one. This book is a very good book on contemplative prayer from a Christian perspective and an introduction to the spiritual life of prayer and how to use prayer as connection to the divine. Even though this book is an excellent resource on Contemplative Prayer, it is someone clunky for the beginners in this area and has any theological and latin expressions.Most people think of prayer as a corporate thing that you just do to talk to God. This book helps one to understand that prayer is a tool not just for connecting to the divine but also to oneself and gives a nod to the comtemplative prayer of the Eastern Orthodox Church and Eastern religions such as Buddhism. Prayer not as communication and making wishes but prayer to transform ourselves and unite with God.

This is harder work than many of his more popular works, perhaps because it’s aimed at the monastic rather than lay community. For the same reason, it is also a clearer and more phenomenological tract. As the stars indicate, I loved it.

A small book with a lot to say. It has been astonishing for me to find someone who has so much to say about a topic I’ve just discovered. It does seem a bit biased but it seems to me he had a particular audience in mind when he wrote this essay. I feel all of Christendom would benefit from a study of this work. I am a recent convert and was delighted to find Thomas Merton and Thomas Keating. They have helped me understand the nature of the calling I received at my moment of conversion. Like Paul on the road to Damascus I was not looking for or expecting a calling from Christ. Since it happened I have been attending many churches’ but not found a true home. However, I have found a place I like. Merton and Keating have shown me I do have a place and a part to play and have helped me to comprehend the message I received. I thank them.

I found this a helpful text in my own struggles with prayer, dread and the difficulties of spiritual life. Merton speaks from a place personal struggle. This is a text I imagine I will return to more than once.

Thomas Merton is one of the two or three best sources for understanding comtemplative prayer and its importance in one's spiritual journey.

Thomas Merton's thoughtful work on Contemplative Prayer is worthy of careful contemplation by Christians of all traditions. The chapters are brief as is the book but it contains many powerful ideas. Merton is careful to not separate contemplation from either corporate worship or service. He will have none of the false dichotomy of "spiritual" life and "earthly" life. He also avoids pointing to contemplation as a gimmick or a method for true spirituality. The highlight of the book for me came on page 112. I absolutely could not put this book down. From the premise---a groom dies in a one-car accident driving the opposite direction of the church on his wedding day (with a baby gift in the back seat)--to the beautiful story that unfolds as a woman comes to terms with a life she did not choose. I loved how Allen wove in the difficulty of mother/daughter relationships with the fabulous story line regarding the main character's Grandmother Ruthie. There was so much to love in this bittersweet tale. Do not miss the opportunity to read it for yourself.

This is a fantastic story told by an author that know how to tell a story. There are many themes in the book, lost faith, lost love, death, family relationships especially mother/daughter. The author is great at intertwining them as she tells the story of Wyatt and Olivia. The author has a sense of humor which comes out in Olivia and her grandmother Ruth. For me I liked the way Olivia throughout the book doubted her faith and felt like God was punishing her as one thing after another goes wrong. But with the help of grandmother Ruth little by little she sees her way was not the right way and she needed to make faith an important part of her life. Faith also was a huge obstacle with her mother. I found her mother to be cold hearted and could not excuse her hurtful comments to Olivia. We find out later her mother has a secret that caused her to have these feelings towards Olivia but for my it was not justification for such bad behavior.Lots of life lessons in the book giving it a purpose besides being entertaining. I think this is one of the best books I have read this year. I totally loved Olivia! She has a hard time finding her way but in the end she finds happiness. highly recommend this book.

This is an uplifting story of a woman's terrible heartbreak and spiritual separation from her family and from God. Olivia's story is told with humor and sensitivity. You will fall in love with Grammy Ruthie. It was fascinating to see how various people came into Olivia's life just when she needed them most. Also, there is a pretty intriguing mystery in the story that was solved in a very satisfying way. A very good read.

Not much of a romance reader, but this story is so well written that I couldn't put it down. You think it's a mystery solving plot and you already know what happens in the first chapters. Well maybe, maybe not. Getting to the answers in life after tragedy is always difficult and different for all of us. This story brings it all together, love, forgiveness and spiritual understanding. I will recommend this book to everyone. Especially my daughter who miscarried and is now pregnant again. I want her to understand the blessing and pain of both and how she can "Choose Joy".

I wanted to like this novel. I enjoyed the author's book Walking On Broken Glass. But this one just didn't do it for me. It took almost half the book for me to admit it wasn't going anywhere, but I stuck it out (well, pretty much skimmed from then on) because the book blurb promised so much. It didn't deliver.The biggest problems for me were:1. Overblown writing. This was probably because it was written in first person, so it was undoubtedly because,2. The main character was a major drama queen. Another reviewer described her as an adult acting like a 15-year-old, and that pretty much nailed it. Maybe that was just pregnancy hormones ... ?3. It dragged terribly in places. There were enormous chunks of writing that did nothing to further the plot. As I mentioned, I skimmed half of it and didn't feel like I'd missed much of anything.So, yeah, not much here to love. And I feel bad about that because I did like the other book of hers I'd read. I'll probably give the author another chance, but I'm super glad I got this one as a Kindle Unlimited book and hadn't spent anything on it.

Bride waits at her wedding for the groom until she gets a call that he has died in an accident 50 miles away going in the opposite direction. In the backseat of his car is a baby gift. The book is well-written, but you suspect the ending almost from the beginning yet keep reading for a twist. The author lets us in on how one woman deals with uncovering the pain in a relationship she thought was perfect.

A missing groom, a distraught bride-not-to-be, mother-daughter conflict, a Dad trying to be a peacemaker, a perky and helpful grandmother, and friends trying to help. This is a mystery but mostly a story of a young woman trying to heal from loss, heal relationships, and discover the meaning of faith in God. The only downside of the book--at times it seemed to be never ending. In the end, it was a satisfying read. Highly recommend for young adult through senior adult women.

Starting this journey was rocky. It took me a bit to get into the writing style which includes a lot of sarcasm and whining from the protagonist. I'm glad I stuck with it. As the characters and story developed I was pulled in to learn the secrets and past.

I know Mac very well. He is the real thing: a renaissance man who is well educated, widely experienced, and innately handy. When it comes to log home building Mac "has been there and done that." I don't understand the one and two star critics. I suggest disregarding their criticism. Buy the book(s). Better yet, meet the man and take one of his tutorials on blacksmithing, stone working, or log home construction.

This is an amazing collection of tips, tricks, and instructions for a log builder. The only disappointment in the entire book was the section on hewing. There weren't many pictures and I can see where new log builders would have trouble catching on.Then again, I'm a hewing addict who loves learning every nuance and variation on basic methods, so perhaps the problem is with me expecting too much. At any rate, every hewn-log builder should buy this book. Mr. McRaven is one of the foremost log buildings in North America, and the chapter on chinking alone is worth the cover price.

I have several books on how to build a log cabin and I must say that this is my favorite. Why? Because this is one of the few books on the subject that you can sit down to read like a story book. It will is no wise bore you as I have seen with other books of its kind. This book is not about modern log building (ie. the 5000sq foot home made out of logs) It is about the historical log cabin and what you need to build one. It specializes in the half-dovetail, hewn, chinked log home. It is not a extensive and exhaustive how-to manual with endless calculations and diagrams. There are other books out there for that. But, this book is very simple, straightforward, and to-the-point. McRaven has been building these cabins for over 60 years ( more than any other log builder I have heard of ). The pictures of the stonework, hand forged hardware and the entire structural restorations really do prove that. While he points out what was authentic to history,he doesn't build with historical problems. He combines new and improved techniques with old style, antique beauty. He does a good job on explaining what to do and what not to do. He says it like,"Don't do this because years later you will have problems. But do this and your home will last longer and look better." The chapter on chinking is a gold mine. McRaven has created an improved way to put in that long plagued chinking. The design it so simple, yet again, is built to last for generations. I would not be surprised that 100 years from now, when these structures are still standing, that this style of chinking is called,"McRaven's Chinking." This chapter alone is worth the book. The book is an excellent choice. It is a simple read for those who do not want the exhaustive how-to manual. I highly recommend it.

Her settings and her characters make the reader feel like a time traveler. As I read THE CALLING OF THE CLAN, Book 2, I felt immersed in the Scottish culture and values of the period. Bonds is also a master when it comes to skillfully portraying the battle between the mind and the heart. By the end of this novel, she poignantly demonstrates the need for love that each one of us feels. Her characters mature slowly and thoughtfully. And as they allow for a deeper meaning to take hold of their actions, we celebrate the victory of their hearts over the tyranny of their minds.

I happened upon this book at the recommendation of another author, and even though it isn't in the genre I normally read, I was so hooked when I read the 1st chapter with Amazon's "look inside" feature, that I just had to buy the Kindle version. The setting begins along the coastline of North Carolina during the unsettling days when the colonies were fighting for independence and still being threatened by Native Americans. An unlikely suitor comes to call on Lady Catriona Kilcairne determining to have her for his wife and he's not easily dissuaded. Catriona decides she must marry him in order to save the lovely home of her parents, the only home she's ever known. They say that opposites attract, but marrying one can make life oh, so difficult. This story was extremely gripping. The love shown throughout the story became the cornerstone of their foundation.Sometimes we don't stop to realize what makes our mate or even ourselves tick. A lack of communication and understanding can cause such uncalled for agony.I received this book in lew of an honest review. Someone told me that I would like it even better than The Captive, book 1. I honestly didn't think that was possible yet it's true. As much as the first book touched my heart, this one went even deeper!Excellent, Excellent book. I will read this series over and over again, it was that good. I'm sure you will like or even love it too.

This was a great read and page turner from Paris Afton Bonds, one of my favorite authors! The main Characters, Jacob and Catriona seemed larger than life and three-dementional. Jacob made for a handsome, driven and sensitive hero, though a man of few words and much action. I love how patient he was and how he never gave up. Cat took a long time to realize his love for her. Great secondary characters.

Oh my gosh! One of the best love stories I've read in many years! Being of Scots Irish dissent myself, and with having my first ancester find his way to the colonies just at birth of the new nation only added to the beauty and power of this story. Bonds is gifted in taking the reader to the depths of despair to the ecstasy and the power of true love, all in the midst of settling a new nation. Well done. I will definitely go on to read the boxes set of Clans.

This is a book worth your reading time. The historical research alone is spot on, and the story produced from that research will leave you wanting more. When I came to the last page, I found myself sad that it ended. I wanted to know about Cat and Jacob. I wanted to continue to follow their adventures and their passions. Really hoping there will be a #3!
