Admittedly, I love cookbooks, but this is one of the best I have found in a long time. Although covering fondue, the delectable meals described within this volume bring a new level of sophistication to previous books I have read. Covering variations of classic cheese fondue, there is an enjoyable array of recipes from a party favorites, "Bavarian Beer Fondue" and "Norman Cheese and Apple Fondue" to a more up-scale, "Lobster Gruyere Fondue". This book also delves wonderfully into oil fondues with a whole chapter on corresponding gourmet sauces. One of my favorites, "Filet Mignon and Shrimp Fondue". This latter dish may sound a bit spendy, but you can substitute other cuts of tender beef, if you wish. The pages are beautifully illustrated with exquisite photography, which leave you not only wanting to turn the pages, one after another, but looking forward to trying each new fondue dish. Few cookbooks have this effect on me. This one is definitely a keeper!

Bought this as a replacement for a copy I purchased years ago that my dog chewed on. It's a great book, and most of these fondues could also be kept warm in a small crockpot and used as dips with chips for parties.

Excellent book. We've tried several of the recipes and really liked them. Good selection of dipping sauces too. This is becoming one of our most used cookbooks

GOES GREAT WITH FONDUE AS SHOWER GIFT

Good easy to follow recipes that come out the way they should.

To know is in this book. I am very satisfied with it and recommend it.

Well written great pictures just getting started with fondue

This cookbook has practical and do-able ideas for fondue. For someone like me, who wasn't sure I would venture beyond a basic cheese fondue recipe, this cookbook will show you how easy it is to prepare many different recipes. Includes menus and recipes for sauces.

This is the second McLaren book I've read, and I have the same issue with both - he has a good idea, he states it clearly at the outset, he spends a chapter or two doing a good job setting it up....and then he just gets lost. In reading both books I had the exact same experience of being really excited, going along with him for the ride for several chapters, and then finding myself just tossing the thing aside, because it got bogged down. So to be fair, I have to say I did not finish this book. I TRIED - mightily. But after really making his point in the first couple of chapters, teasing you that he would develop them further in the remainder of the book, he simply didn't. So I left.

I liked this book a lot. McLaren is very warm to those that would disagree with him, and many of his ideas are very compelling. He makes the case for a new "kind" of Christian identity, which he calls "strong and benevolent" in contrast to the "strong but hostile" style of hardline Conservative Christianity, and the "weak but benevolent" style of the more liberal/unitarian beliefs.I think this book is worth reading regardless of your beliefs or views. McLaren's challenges in this book are very needed in today's world, and I found myself regularly challenged by it. He also really seems to live it out. However, I will say that this book is directed to Christians. The book title might be a little misleading - the book is largely about Christianity, and doesn't spend much more than a chapter talking about the specifics of Islam or Judaism.Personally there are many aspects of Christianity that I hold dearly such as the afterlife, and the problem of suffering apart from human evil, or spiritual formation that are either unaddressed or de-emphasized by McLaren. But no book is complete. I enjoyed the book a lot, and I think it will help me be a better neighbor.

Why do we think that our beliefs are supreme over others' beliefs? And based on those differences, oftentimes, results in the most violent and offensive actions. Beliefs always transfer into decisions and then actions. The kind of God you believe in, whether loving and benevolent, or violent and retributive, determines how you treat "the other".Brian gives a very insightful perspective of our historical decisions that have not always resulted in benevolence but rather conflict and murder. We should walk the road with benevolence toward our fellow Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist to work together to help the poor, the needy, the outcasts, as well as making sound decisions about our use of this beautiful planet, keeping in mind how our decisions and actions might affect individuals' well being across the globe.

"To accept and love God, must I betray my neighbor of another religion? To accept and love my neighbor, must I betray the God of my religion?"The past couple of decades have been exceptional when it comes to religious diversity. Christianity is no longer the cultural norm in America. Incidents across the world have highlighted our many differences. How do Christians respond to Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, and so on?Brian McLaren's appropriately titled book Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road? attempts to refocus our goals as followers of Christ. From a purely historical and literary perspective, Jesus is a very interesting character. He spends almost his entire ministry with societal outcasts while specifically avoiding the religious authority of the day. Now fast forward over two thousand years, where do we find the followers of Jesus? Are they more concerned about loving people or staying in line with Christian values?McLaren divides this book into four sections. The Crisis of Christian Identity. Identify yourself as a Christian and you will unfortunately be labeled with several negative qualities. Regrettably, most of these perceived qualities have been earned by well-intended but severely misguided Christians. Just like the Pharisees found in the Gospels, Christians today have become more concerned about staying holy and not sinning that we forget to love our brothers and sisters on earth. To be strong Christians, we need humble hearts. To be strong Christians, we need to focus on loving others as an act of loving God. We will definitely receive reprimands from the Christian mainstream but as McLaren reminds us, "Crucifixion happens, not at the hand of others, but Us."The Doctrinal Challenge and The Liturgical Challenge. These two sections were a bit weak in my opinion. I understand McLaren's desire to refocus our doctrines and liturgy so that we focus more on others and the love that God wants us to show. I liked the areas where I felt like he was correcting doctrinal misunderstandings, but I didn't like how he tried to change the entire focus of a tradition or sacrament. See chapter on baptism. I certainly don't disagree with his changes or adjustments, I just don't think the changes are the solution. There was not much tie in to the whole theme of the book. The Missional Challenge. The best way to describe the challenge of being a Christian in a multifaith world can be summed up by Gandhi. One, be like Christ. Two, don't tone done your message. Three, center on love. Four, study non-Christian religions. In conclusion, this is great book on religious diversity and more importantly, loving others. This is the book I think Rob Bell was trying to write when he penned Love Wins. Brian McLaren does a great job writing in simple and straightforward terms. He does not try to throw Greek words at you to prove a theological point. I look forward to reading more from McLaren in the future.

Excellent book for our time when there is so much hatred for people of other faiths. Mr McLaren shows how we can connect with other faiths without diluting our own faith. He shows us how to give compassion to others and to see God at work in other faiths. I have always believed that God shows himself to all in different ways. He does not despise others as they are His children also. Remember the story of Abraham, Sarah and her servant Hagar. Sarah was jealous of Hagar as Ismael was the first born of their family and Isaac the second born. But God did not desert Ismael and Hagar but promised them blessings in the future. We have to look at others and see God in them. This is the way to bring peace to earth by joining together for the good of all.

Completely confounded by the good reviews. Purchased to use with a homeschool Ancient Egyptian unit for my 7 year old. She just finished 2nd grade and will start 3rd grade this fall. This book is so rudimentary with lots of explanations for things that are not important! For example, one activity is to build a horse toy out of clay ~ since the type of toy was popular back then and is still popular today. Another activity is to pretend to be an archaeologist, marking off a spot of dirt in your backyard and then sifting it to see what you find. Archaeologists do not sift through random sites! They study where things might be, look for evidence of settlements, etc. They don't just randomly dig in the backyard.Instead I was looking for an activity book that taught about ANCIENT EGYPT - gods, mythology, feasts, important rulers, art, etc. There are much better resources for activities elsewhere. I highly recommend Evan Moor's Ancient Egypt History Pockets, Great Ancient Egypt Projects You Can Build Yourself by Carmella Van Vleet, Spend the Day in Ancient Egypt: Projects and Activities That Bring the Past to Life by Linda Honan, Metropolitan Museum of Art's Fun with Hieroglyphs, and Ralph Masiello's Ancient Egypt Drawing Book.I would say this is more geared to prek/kinder and maybe 1st grade. My daughter has zero interest in these activities and sees them as too 'little kid'. Recommend previewing it with a library copy before purchasing.

We are going to use this in our homeschool studies. I love that there's plenty hands-on projects (I am not sure we'll be able to do them all!). The information is easy to read and the projects are made of simple inexpensive things.

Absolutely love this book, when I can get it from my kids! Plenty of ideas for hours of fun activities.

cant wait to give this to my little one for his bday !! He loves everything Egyptian and this should be a great way to do new fun activities !!! I read thru it and it looks like a TON OF FUN !!! GREAT BOOK FOR KIDS WHO NEED TO USE THEIR MINDS & SHUT OFF THE TV !!!

Cute project ideas!

great for unit study for elementary kids.

This book will keep a child entertained for days on end. There is a huge wealth of fun and interesting information within, plus great activities. As a children's librarian I was able to plan a whole program around this title complete with activities. Loved it.

This book was purchased to provide my daughter, who teaches in elementary school, a resource for teaching ancient history to children. She tells me the activities are fun, easy to use, and very helpful.

Desert Cabal: A New Season in the Wilderness, by Amy Irvine

Review

"A slim volume reminiscent of the mass–market paperback copies of Desert Solitaire that so many of us have stuffed into a dusty backpack or stowed in the glove compartment on national park road trips… Irvine tells Abbey about climate change, fossil fuel dependence, and the environmental pickle in which we've found ourselves." —PACIFIC STANDARD "Abbey’s self–claimed country, Irvine says, is at risk for exactly the reasons he said it would be: greed, gasoline, and a gaping well of apathy. Preserving wilderness is even more important now than it was half a century ago, but the stakes aren’t as simple as he set them out to be. Desert Cabal has riled up some Abbey fans, but that’s exactly what makes it an important read." —OUTSIDE "A lyrical and raw conversation between Irvine and Abbey that is part tribute, part memoir, and part polemic. It'll get you thinking about the state of the desert, the fate of the wilderness movement and the actions we all need to take to save the places we love (including leaving them alone)." —ADVENTURE JOURNAL “With humor, wisdom and a sense of urgency, Irvine uses Desert Solitaire as a jumping off point to assess the current state of the world, to expose the very human error of the literary heroes on dusty pedestals, and to reinsert many of us back into the narrative… No matter your feelings about Edward Abbey, Irvine's Desert Cabal adds necessary depth to the dialogue. Many of us have been waiting years for that.” —ALBUQUERQUE ALIBI "While Irvine shares the love Abbey, who died in 1989, had for Utah's public lands, she contends some views and sentiments from his time need to be challenged. She points out privileges Abbey enjoyed as a white male; she questions his use of 'Abbey’s country.' From Abbey's first morning in the desert to his tale of a snake that guarded his campsite, Irvine questions and compares their experiences, including their failed marriages." —THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE "The Abbey whom Irvine is talking to is neither the author himself nor a corpse; he's a literary ghost, one that has been living inside herself ever since she fell for his writing." —CATALYST "Fierce and clear—Irvine’s book effectively confronts the ritual of veneration and brings the reader closer to appreciating Abbey's work in a more constructive, relevant and productive frame than what has been allowed in the last five decades." —THE UTAH REVIEW "This iconoclastic inner discussion with her predecessor, Abbey, is fascinating—wherein Irvine challenges Abbey to consider his myopic, privileged perspective without failing in her deference for his attempt to raise consciousness of an entire generation prior." —SLUG MAGAZINE "At once intimate and expansive…a reminder that individuals, even titans like Abbey, can only do so much to save the 'best places.' It really does take a village (or cabal)." —TELLURIDE INSIDE AND OUT “A lyrical, raw and vulnerable conversation.” —TELLURIDE DAILY PLANET "The news Irvine breaks graveside is that the world, and specifically 'Abbey's country,' has changed… and there's no telling where [Abbey's] sentiments would place him in a landscape that now includes Standing Rock and Black Lives Matter, a generation of female activists and the #MeToo movement." —SANTA FE REPORTER "Irvine gradually builds to a ringing conclusion, stating simply and clearly that wilderness lovers 'need intimacy with people every bit as much as with place' and that 'going it alone is a failure of contribution and compassion.'" —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY "While an admirer of Abbey, Irvine illuminates his dated attitudes as she writes a love letter to the Utah desert. This brief series of essays will be enjoyed by those who treasure the desert, environmental activists, and fans of Desert Solitaire.” —LIBRARY JOURNAL “A grief–stricken, heart–hopeful, soul song to the American Desert, a wail, a keening, a rant, a scolding, a tumult, a prayer, an aria, and a call to action. Amy Irvine implores us to trade in our solitude for solidarity, to recognize ourselves in each other and in the places we love, so that we might come together to save them. In this time of all out war being waged on America’s Public Lands, I'm glad she's on my side.” —PAM HOUSTON, author of Contents May Have Shifted “Amy Irvine is Ed Abbey's underworld, her roots reaching into the dark, hidden water. In a powerful, dreamlike series of essays, she lays Desert Solitaire bare, looking back at the man who wrote the book and the desert left behind. This stream of consciousness, this conversation, this broadside is an alternate version of Abbey's country. It is another voice in the wilderness.” —CRAIG CHILDS, author of Atlas of a Lost World and Apocalyptic Planet"Ed Abbey's rise to sainthood has been a bit awkward: here is an earth hero who guzzles gas in search of his personal Eden, a champion of the underdog who snubs Mexican and Native people, an anarchist rabble–rouser who utters not a peep about his perch atop the patriarchy. Finally someone—and it could be no better iconoclast than Amy Irvine—wrassles him off the pedestal back down to the red dirt where he belongs. Half riot, half tribute, this is a roadmap through a crisis that neither Abbey nor any of us imagined." —MARK SUNDEEN, author of The Man Who Quit Money and The Unsettlers "If you’ve ever talked back to the canonical tomes of the environmental movement, this is a book for you. Here are the women, the people, the children, and the intimate dangers those old books so frequently erased. Here is a new and necessary ethic that might help us more openly love the land and the many living beings who share it. I found myself nodding—Yes! Yes! Thank you!—on nearly every page of Desert Cabal." —CAMILLE T. DUNGY, author of Guidebook to Relative Strangers: Journeys into Race, Motherhood and History and editor of Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry

Just about everyone who has read Desert Solitaire finds something (perhaps many somethings) in it they love. Just the same, they unearth plenty in the now half-century-old classic which they contend with or take offense to. Irvine takes Edward Abbey to task on some of the topics that so many of us have thought about or wanted to: Abbey's view on women, migrants (and/or immigration), and on the whole 'solitaire' notion. In Abbey's original Solitaire manuscript and his early journals, he was shown to have wife and child with him during one of his "seasons" in his little over-baked aluminum trailer in Arches; why no mention? Was 'solitaire' and solitude merely a portrayal, an image Abbey wished to uphold? In Cabal, Irvine points of that the idea of rugged individualism has, in some ways, gotten us into the absurd messes we western denizens have created and are now really beginning to wallow in. It takes a community, a cabal, to ultimately find solutions to these man-made messes, or to do anything else for that matter. (Abbey, of course, did appreciate what early Mormon settlers, as a community, accomplished.)Irvine does a fabulous job of presenting these rebuttals in a series of chapter-by-chapter essays, though they are not strictly rebuttals. (For some strange reason it's easy to agree with Abbey while disagreeing with him, as Irvine continually alludes to; we are all multi-sided, paradoxical individuals in a growing group of paradoxical individuals.) In addition, Irvine tells some of her story, but not to the point the book loses its focus. I really enjoyed this book! At fewer than 100 pages, it's a fairly straightforward read---straightforward, as in easy to read in one sitting---and can be re-read and studied in greater depth. There's a lot in it, for such a diminutive work. I wish it was longer!

I'd been anticipating this book for some time. Although the actual reading was basically pleasing, and Irvine can certainly create a really good sentence, this offering falls short of the mark insofar as what was promised in all its marketing hype. Admittedly it's been many years since I read Desert Solitaire, so I need to do that, then perhaps re-read this brief volume immediately afterward for another comparison. But this slim book left me wishing there was more to it.Taking Abbey to task in each chapter was admirable yet also felt somewhat rote, and Irvine's own personal history does not encompass all that the stunning desert wildlands encompass. While I appreciate her own historical link to the land—in terms of her Utah Mormon ancestry—being able to inform her viewpoint in a different manner than Abbey, it lacked a wider view that I think is necessary in this age. More people come to these places now from somewhere else, seeking solace or quiet or respite or simple beauty that does not exist back wherever they call home. Although I do understand those who have claimed Utah as their homeland for a few generations now feeling possessive or closer to it than those who arrived later, I'm also tired of them. They do not hold the only claim to these places. I realize she gets that, she knows that, yet for me it was too much of her own background to read about. While I also realize she can only tell her own story from her own viewpoint, I suppose I'm simply wishing for a more overarching text about Abbey's country...Amy's country...our wild sandstone and canyon red rock country. Maybe it's also that I don't like whiskey, or guns, in the backcountry, that somewhat turned me off. Her revelations about her own history are risky, vulnerable, and for that I laud her. She was using the Abbey model, the model of all personal essays, of bringing oneself into the landscape and the text. It is brave, and for that, I toast her with a raised glass of whatever one's beverage of choice might be.Yet with sublime words like these, I hoped for much more: “No longer can we be voyeurs, catching from scenic pullouts mere glimpses of the wild, uneven territory of our collective unconscious. The hour at hand demands that we molt all that we want and believe we know. Now we must slither — belly to stone — into the dens and burrows of our souls.” Yes, please. Our souls need more, so much more. Can someone please write a dense, rich, long, lusciously wandering yet tightly woven narrative about this topic of a season in the southern Utah wilderness? Gendered or not, rebuttal or not, pointed differences or not, that book still awaits creation out there somewhere. Maybe one day Irvine will be the one to pen it.

Depressing and negative, giving the exact opposite feeling you get after reading Desert Solitaire. Was hoping for an uplifting, updated, modern take on Abbey's classic. Instead we get attack after attack on Abbey's admittedly dated view on environmental issues, with nothing new offered in it's place, making this book a huge missed opportunity.

Pretty good little book. It raises some thoughtful criticism of Edward Abbey’s writings and the worldview that has proceeded from them. Definitively worth reading by Abbey’s fans.

I enjoyed the book, read it the first night I had it;thoughtful, entertaining

If ever a book about American public lands was regarded with reverence, it’s Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitude. Although I knew about it for years (and read his novel The Monkey Wrench Gang), I didn’t take on the sacred text until I first went to the Utah wilderness. A Moab bookseller recommended it along with Terry Tempest Williams’ Refuge, which I admired as much. But Williams didn’t confront the mystique of Abbey, who was dead and buried in the Arizona desert.Amy Irvine is not as polite. At a time when Moab is crawling with every kind of expensively clad wilderness adventurer, Irvine visits the place where Abbey’s ashes were buried and takes him on. She tells him how his worst expectations for the Utah desert and Arches National Park in particular have been far exceeded. And she blames not only the extraction industries but zealous environmentalists.Along with sharing stories about her wilderness experience, Irvine takes on Abbey for pretending to be alone, solitary, when often he was accompanied by one of his five (sequential) wives and his children. She informs him about the #metoo. Movement. And she lays down the reasons why being a woman alone in the wilderness is far more dangerous than for a solitary man. Yet like him, she finds the desert compelling and demanding, inspiring and treacherous. Like Abbey and her late father, she finds elation in risk. She is a worthy adversary. If you love Desert Solitude, you should read these essays. If you haven’t read Abbey’s book, buy them both.

It is one of the strangeness of modern culture that our live presumes the benefits of science, without being literate in science. Gleiser provides a passionate history of science which makes it possible for a lay person to participate in the adventure of scientific understaning. He places the story of science in the context of the human story, so that science is conceived of in a humanistic and even spiritual manner. It is an enjoyable read. Michael Tan Creti

What I most appreciate is the fact that the writer is honest about the fact that science does not have answers to everything, at least until now.

Excellantly written (and edited) book.

Awesome and I truly loved this product!!!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about Physics, but presented in a way that is easy to understand and helps to make some sense of understanding the various viewpoints of creation and life - and even the meaning of life.

Marcelo Gleiser has the rare gift of explaining with the needed extention and profoundness - in understandable terms and texts for the common interested people - physics and its interest to our lives. The texts are written in agreeable and simple manner, based on his large knowledge of the science, history, philosophy and myths.Highly recommended!

The Dancing UniverseFrom Creation Myths to the Big BangBy Marcelo GleiserBook ReviewBy Richard Edward NobleMarcelo Gleiser is a scientist and a professor of Physics and astronomy at Dartmouth College. He also dabbles in theoretical Cosmology and speculative particle physics. He was born in Brazil and lives in New Hampshire. He is a great writer and "translator" of the scientific class and their "jargon."Professor Gleiser begins this work with a brief review of some ancient myths concerning the origins of this Universe. He divides these myths into "Creation Myths" and "No-Creation Myths."The Creation Myths imply a beginning to the Universe and lead the reader into the notions of God, theology, religion, mysticism etc.The No-Creation Myths are those that imply that the Universe always was and always will be in one shape, form or another - more Hindu or Buddhist or A-theistic than Judao-Christian.He then gets into Philosophy and the ancient Greeks. This is a prime area of interest to me and I always enjoy refreshing my memory in this area. This book is basically a synopsis of the evolution of what we call "science."We begin with the ancient myths, then proceed to the Greek and Roman philosophers as we explore the root thoughts on the possible answers as to how we have this universe around us. We explore all the early suggestions with professor Gleiser as our guide and interpreter.I have decided to use this book as my workbook on improving my knowledge of the evolution of cosmological thought.I have already started looking up each and every name brought forward by the professor and have been reading and researching more about each of them. The professor tells us briefly what each has to say and the value of their contribution. But this subject interests me and I would like to know more.I have now read and reviewed two books by Professor Gleiser "A Tear at the Edge of Creation" and this one. I have enjoyed both immensely. The author deals with and discusses religious and theological thoughts and its influences on this subject but make no mistake, this is a "secular" work and in no way a defense of any religious point of view."How necessary is this separation between science and religion? Very. It serves as a protective device against subjectivism in the practice of science, insuring that it remains a common language in a very diverse community. The scientific discourse is, and should be, devoid of any theological content. Invoking religion to fill in the gaps of our scientific understanding today is, in my view, an anti-scientific attitude. If there are gaps in our knowledge (and there are plenty of them!) we should try to fill them with more science and not with theological speculation."He makes this distinction clear throughout the book. The book and the Professor should stimulate any reader in deeper thoughts.A few of my thoughts:1) It is becoming more and more clear to me how science is so easily spun back into religion and mysticism. Cosmology, for example, is so very speculative and hypothetical that the door to Voo-doo is left wide open.2) The science of light ... it is a big problem but very interesting area for more research on my part.3) Newton posited God and His invisible hand in the regulation of the Universe to solve his problem with motion and other discrepancies in his theory of gravity. God supposedly threw the initial stars and planets into the sky. Einstein has a similar problem trying to justify his theory's shortcomings - the cosmological constant. And now we have Hubble's Constant. All of which points out the hidden personal agenda of even the supposed objective scientists. Readers therefore must always be critical of whatever and whoever they are reading. Skepticism comes with the territory.4) I feel even Professor Gleiser may have his own deity and Cosmological constant permeating his blanket acceptance of the Big Bang Theory. I still haven't bought the idea.5) Unlike Stephen Hawking who stated that Philosophy is dead, professor Gleiser gives due credit to Philosophy and blends the Philosophers into his story. A much more realistic and historically accurate point of view in my opinion.6) Page 306: "Nothingness": "However what is meant by nothingness here, as well as in all other examples of quantum creation of the Universe that followed Tryon's inspiring idea must be understood in terms of "quantum mechanical nothingness" and not absolute nothingness as in complete emptiness." FINALLY someone addresses this issue. Bottom line the Universe did not and could not have started from "nothing" as defined philosophically. This has been driving me nuts for years. I have already ordered this author's other work. It has been a long time since I have been so involved in a book as to write in the margins. But I did with this one.The Dancing Universe (re: Ocillating Universe - expanding/contracting) is written for the non-scientist and I must repeat, the author does a wonderful job in this respect. Although much of science/math is above my head, this author is able to bring these lofty concepts and thoughts down to my level. He knows how to talk to the regular guy. He has a third book, The Prophet and the Astronomer - A Scientific Journey. It is on my list. This is a wonderful, wonderful book, for the science student and amateur, scientific explorer. The Hobo Philosopher, Richard Edward Noble is the author of: "That Old Gang of Mine."

Starting with ancient myths, going across the history of philosophical/physical science to our present day, Marcelo Gleiser demonstrates how there is a common language and purpose uniting human thought. There is no sense in maintaining a bi-polarity, a separation between spiritual and scientific inquiries. The quest for the Absolute Reality transcends the distinction between religion and science and each one serves as inspiration for the other. This becomes evident in the arena of the origins of the universe where there is a link between ancient myths and modern cosmology. Mysticism has been a source of inspiration for many scientists and the concept of a "cold, materialist" scientist is totally out of context.Marcelo Gleiser dedicates an extensive chapter on the Greeks, continues his journey into neo-Platonism during the Middle Ages, Copernican revolution, Galileo, Newton, all the way to present optics, thermodynamics, relativity and quantum mechanics. The closer he moves into contemporary science the more technical his language becomes, but overall it is quite an accessible reading which does not require substantial background in major scientific developments. For the author the beauty of science is that it brings us closer to nature; it would be a benefit to each and everyone if science were to be taught with a less emphasis on its cold, rational, "operative" objective. Gleiser also explains how we are slaves to our rational mechanisms (language fails to fully explain the quantum phenomena), how our finite brain attempts to reach the infinite and trascend our bipolar reality.Marcelo Gleiser draws a parallel between myths of creation and cosmological models for the origins of the universe, classifying them into temporal myths with the corresponding theories of the Big-bang or Lemaitre primordial atom, and "atemporal" myths and the corresponding models proposed by Bondi, Gold and Hoyle, or the "Phoenix Universe." He makes use of an informal narrative, with an outspoken enthusiasm, removing the aura circumscribing physics and physicits. In the process he sacrifices technicality for the benefit of a wider scope of readers.

Review

I love your book! I never knew how much fun logic was until I read your book. P.S. I am 12 years old. --Paul Muenster, studentI'm always delighted when two sides that seem mutually opposed come together in harmonious agreement. I'm even more delighted when I've taken one of those sides. In this case, I write of the efforts of Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn, brothers from Iowa who advocate homeschooling and create educational materials from a Christian worldview. The fruit of the latest Bluedorn effort is a short text, The Fallacy Detective, designed to be a primer in logic for older children, specifically homeschooled Christian children, though the book is intended for anyone who wants to explore the subject. . . . I find it wonderful that the Bluedorns, among others, are actively reinvigorating the religious world with a healthy dose of independent thought . . . --Andrew C. Thomas, The Tech (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)My family and I are really enjoying your book. Even my youngest son, who is eight, enjoys attempting to answer the questions. Your book was a great introduction to another program that I had purchased. Going directly into that program probably would have bored my children to tears but now they are interested in the concepts of logic. My children became instantly attracted to the program because of the the comic segments but later couldn't put it down. --LaVera, MD, parent

Great review of logical fallacies with good examples of each of the fallacies described. If you aren't familiar with logical fallacies, read this book and you may never look at news and politics the same again. See how easy it is to jump to bad conclusions by biting on a fallacy dangled before you like a worm on a hook.

I got this book for a little extra work for my homeschooled 8th grader. He began it at the beginning of the school year. Doing a couple lessons a week, he has nearly completed it.He has found it enjoyable, and never complains about doing the lesson. He is definitely learning, too. He has told me when I'm using one of these fallacies. I think his favorite is the red herring. Or, maybe I'm more susceptible to using that one! This book is a great introduction to logical fallacies. The author makes the point in the introduction that the book covers a very small subset of logic. But, it is a great start. I find that many people have not learned critical thinking skills. Reading this book, and working through the exercises, is giving my son a good start to learning those skills.

In the story "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" the Professor is trying to help Lucy solve a problem using logic and reasoning. When she acts like that train of thought is new to her, he makes the comment, "What do they teach children in schools these days?" That is how you will feel when you read this book. My seventh grader has it as required reading for a class I enrolled him in and this should really be taught in schools. Every child needs to know how to reason logically and how to detect fallacious reasoning in advertising, debates and rhetoric. This is a skill we need daily in our media saturated culture. Whether you are in junior high or a grown adult you will find this an enriching read.

I enjoyed reading through this book with my daughter's as a great intro to logical fallacies. The author's examples and humor made this new subject understandable and fun. We gained confidence in recognizing bad reasoning in our everyday lives thanks to this easy to read book. As a homeschool parent, I especially appreciated the review at the end of each chapter which helped keep the fallacies fresh in our minds. We have been inspired to dig deeper into logic.

Nothing is more important than teaching children logic and economics. The latter finds a sound foundation on the former.

I am so glad my daughter had this as part of her homeschool regimen via Amblesideonline, org.I think this is very valuable information for people living in this media driven world. It is important to know when people are trying to manipulate you, for whatever reason.

My 5th grader was drawn to this book, though I bought it for my 7th grader. It is attractively arranged, with illustrations which draws the reader.

My two sons (ages 13 and 14) loved this curriculum and it made it easy for them to learn what fallacies are all about. I highly recommend.

I purchased this for a Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land and started reading the sections we were scheduled to visit. When I read the author's opinion that the Holy Family stayed in Bethlehem with Joseph's parents, I raised my eyebrows, but when I next read that "Joseph was therefore a stonemason..." (page 35), I decided to trash the book. If the rest of the book portray's the author's opinion (based on his own private revelation, maybe?) as fact, it is, at best, misleading. Some people would say heresy. Don't waste your money on this if you are a bible-loving Christian.

This is a small book and easily fits in a purse. That does mean that the font is on the small side. It has photos and maps and gives concise history and background of all the sites so it is good to take along on your tour. It does NOT contain any info about hotels, restaurants, etc.

For people touring Israel, or just wanting information about various Biblical sites, this is a very helpful resource. Because it is designed to be carried in a pocket or a day-bag, the print is rather small. The information in this little jewel is very accurate and highly informative.

Seems very comprehensive and good. One quibble. I wish there was a larger map in the book to locate all the places mentioned.

Small and easy to carry, but full of information and details to make our tour more meaningful. Very well done!!! Really love this guide.

Nice size for travel and packed with great info for a first time traveler there.

wonderful book, I had the priviledge of going on a 2 week visit in Israel in Jan. with Dr Luker, the book is exactly what we saw and if I had read the book prior to the trip, I would have understood more of what I saw and experienced. What an awesome experience to read and to actually see the land where Jesus lived and taught. Makes the Bible so real, and made my faith and belief so much stronger.

Useful information but organized in a rather odd way for me.
