About the Author
Aaron Hogan is a husband, a dad of three, and an educator who is committed to helping those around him be their best. Since he entered the classroom nine years ago as a high school English teacher, he has been trying to reimagine education within his sphere of influence to make school great for students. He currently serves as the Coordinator for English, Language Arts, and Reading in College Station ISD. Previously, he served as an assistant principal at Cypress Grove Intermediate School after spending time as assistant principal and classroom teacher at his alma mater, A&M Consolidated High School. In addition, Aaron is a blogger, author, and speaker. He is passionate about social emotional learning, innovation in education, and connecting educators for professional growth. Every teacher, new or veteran, needs an empathetic coach- someone who understands how challenging teaching can be but remains positive. Aaron is that coach for those teachers fighting the feeling of surviving and wanting to THRIVE. It's a quick read from cover to cover which is perfect for busy teachers/administrators! But perhaps, more importantly, doesn't need to be read chapter by chapter. Each chapter stands alone as a powerhouse of inspiration! Have you ever recommended a very good dessert to someone and you watched that person take their first bite because you know they'd give you that big smile and nod their approval? I would recommend this book to all my teacher friends and sit back and wait for that same reaction. This is a very good book. I found myself constantly discovering nuggets of inspiration and wisdom that sent me scurrying to my twitter account to say, "Look at this...this is awesome!" It is a book that I would sit down to read a few pages and find myself reading for a couple hours. Many times I found myself stopping and going back to reread passages that I felt were especially important. I am NOT a "pie in the sky" educator, but I am positive, have a growth mindset and seek out innovation and creative strategies. I plan on reading this book at least once more before school starts!
Shattering the perfect Teacher Myth is by far one of the most refreshing and amazing reads yet. Aaron Hogan brings to light what should have been said a long time ago and does it with such a great tone. Teacher Myth should be a read every teacher and administrator read. So worth it & worth while.
Hogan nails this topic down. He shatters the idea that effective teachers are perfect. He makes it acceptable, expected even, that all educators fail from time to time. Lrarning from failed attempts is how teachers refine their practice. I read this to prepare for supporting new teachers and found myself needing to hear ALL of this myself. Many educators know these principles...but we rarely spend time reflecting on them to launch us toward a plan for success. I appreciate the message. It is a quick read with lasting impact. I feel like it would make a PHENOMENAL book chat as we support and retain teachers in the field.
This book is a must-read for any educator or educational leader who wants to transform schools to what they can and should be for our students! I love how Hogan breaks down common myths about education/teachers into 6 truths that help us to THRIVE as he calls it in the book. It wil have you reflecting a lot about your own practices and inspire you to truly make lasting relationships with students and staff and create a culture where it's safe to be vulnerable.
Teachers are a busy group of people, and we commonly use that as an excuse not to pursue change. This book does a fantastic job of confronting those inhibitions to help teachers conquer myths and truly thrive. I will be referencing it often and hope to start a teacher book club with it as well!
