The Kindle version I bought on May 17, 2017, compared to the audio version, has a small and insignificant gap in text on page 223 after the sentence that reads "For example, 23andMe ... two disorders with devastating health outcome." Hopefully, the book editor will correct this minor issue that does not make me return the book. Apart from the content that is very educational for me, I am especially enjoying the audio version while looking or sometimes not looking at the text. I am a very slow reader in general and especially in English, which is my second language, so another very significant benefit for me is being able to see and hear new words, English phrases, and terminology in correct pronunciation. The audio version also allows me to move through the book faster and thus better maintain continuity of my ubderstanding of this new and very challenging subject for me. In short, I am experiencing a very pleasant and illuminating activity. Many thanks to author Steven J Heine, the narrator if a different person(?), and all who contributed to this book. The enlightenment that its readers will experience will help them better handle intellectually and emotionally such challenging issues as GMO foods, personal health, family health, as well as health of our society and mankind. Well done!

A must read, book. Starts with the science of heritability and gradually adds other factors to show that DNA is not destiny

I felt that this book did a fairly decent job exposing some of the hyperbole of the DNA direct to consumer industry and its overstated claims. I experienced this myself when I uploaded my DNA to a free online program that compares it to a number of current research studies out there on genes and their links to disease. It was not uncommon to see some genes indicating high probabilities of getting something like Parkinson's later in life only to see other sections of my genome directly contradict the results. For this reason I think it is is appropriate that the FDA reigned in 23andMe.The one criticism I would give of the book is that Steve seems to spend too much time injecting his own personal and rather PC opinions into the book. Couple of examples:1. He rightly indicates that Lawrence Summer's contention that their could be a genetic component of gender aptitude is a question perhaps worthy of scholarship. However he then goes into the idea that internalization of stereotypes could lead women knowing of such an idea to under-perform. While I think that is a legitimate point and certainly interesting to be cognizant of the affects on performance that stereotypes may cause, that alone is not sufficient reason to impede scholarship. Of course Steven is a social scientist of a rather politically correct bent so he believes that it is sufficient reason to not even ask a question.2. I thought the Eugenics chapter could have been more fun if it asked bolder questions and I think contains a serious logic flaw. Steven goes into a very long explanation of the affect of environment on IQ. I think it is a valid point, though I would put it more in the realm of an "external enabling condition," that is to say environment is necessary for one to live up to their full genetic IQ potential. It is a necessary, but not sufficient condition. However Steve's real interest in the heritability of IQ is really to establish that it is polygenomic, similar to height and so many other characteristics, and therefore we can't hope to change it through Eugenics. This is clearly an incorrect premise. One need only look to what he himself refers to later in the book, the breeding of dogs for all manner of characteristics, to see that breeding for characteristics that are polygenomic is not only possible, it has already been done. He probably could have examined this in a fun manner or if he just wanted to say he finds the whole premise distasteful because it would require governments to incentivize the procreation of some over others, than he should just say that not try to couch it in a rather illogical attempt to disprove the possibility that such an effort would be successful. In fact we have no idea if it would be successful or not, because due to societies aversion to the premise it was never undertaken for long enough to prove or disprove the possibility. Human generations are a lot longer than dog generations.Aside from my occasional annoyance at the politically correct nature of the arguments, I did find the book generally enjoyable. I found the chapter on the genetics of homosexuality to be particularly interesting, though I would think that the sexual fluidity of females which he mentions but doesn't explore in any depth warrants further investigation. Anyhow... the book is a pretty quick read and I don't feel that I wasted my time in reading it. I would probably like to read something from a hard scientist written in a manner approachable to a general audience as a followup.

I like the concept that you can change your DNA destiny... it is not a death sentence if you have a problem in your DNA. Too much blah blah blah... never finished the book ...gave it to a friend😀.

I am not a pastor, but I am a pastor's wife. This book has a great format. It is written in the form of letters -- letters from younger pastors to older pastors. I think the advice given in these letters is sound. And I very much appreciate the answers that are shared. I really like the letter about Sabbath rest. I think that one is my favorite. I kind of disagree a bit with the letter about the pastor's wife's role in the church. I might wholly agree if I had very small children. My children are teenagers or grown at this time. What I kind of disagree with is that the writer said the pastor's wife is just another congregation member. And I see his point, BUT it isn't true. Every church expects a pastor's wife to have a certain role. Yes, we put husband and family first but pastors should put their spouses and families before the church too. So, it isn't any different. I think all pastors would benefit from reading this book.

This book covers a subject much needed to be covered - how to keep going in pastoral ministry through the tough time. There will be tough times. The book is written in letter form and is easy to read. It isn't a long book, but it covers the subject well.

Amazing insights from some ministry giants. Lots of great wisdom from people who know all too well the challenges of ministry. Highly recommended.

A textbook is only good as its author, and Ron Larson knows how to write and teach. I wanted to take Calc, but I needed a precalc refresher, so I bought this. The problems are worked out, the diagrams are clear and altogether, and there's not too much fluff, although the design and layout is visuallyenticing. Larson has written several math books, including a calc textbook. Before buying this, I owned Swokowski's Algebra and Trig textbook, which is way too formal. I compared some chapters on how it defined certain concepts, and Larson won every time, while Swokowski buried everything in the most formal formulas x/a (a>0), f(x)= x/a(a1, a2, a3...)...which was way too rigorous and review like, and lacking in instruction.Oh, and the problem key has the answer to EVERY single problem, and there are tons of them. Very happy with this purchase!

If you are taking precalculus then buy this book(or any of the newer versions of this book). I bought this older version because of the price - great price for this version as compared to the newer version. I also found answer manual on Amazon with detailed solutions to all the problems at a cheap price. The author Professor Ron Larson has a gift of writing books. His books are better than the explanations of many teachers, This will forever change your life. It is a gateway to calculus 1 or AP Calculus AB, and calculus 2 or AP Calculus BC. . It will turn your life upside down. If you want to study engineering or physics please give up now before it is too late - start to strengthen your fundamentals. I highly recommend this book.

I really like this textbook. I bought it, so I could review algebra concepts and learn a little pre-calculus before I started an Honors Pre-Calculus course at school. This book was clear, had a lot of practice questions, and explained the applications of the topics described in the book. When I ordered this book, I thought that I would be getting the teacher's edition, which contains written solutions to each of the problems, but I received the normal student edition. For the low price, this is an excellent textbook for anyone looking to learn pre-calculus on their own or as a supplement to a school class.

I needed a new precalculus textbook to replace the one I lost and this got the job done. It still had all the pages, had minimal vandalism and the binding was still in tact. Don't buy new textbooks, buy used, the schools will replace the whole textbook line for that class within 10 years anyway and the books all look the same.

I had originally taken a precalculus course at a community college and used a different book from this one. In addition to using an inferior book, the instructor also decided to skip over trigonometry altogether. It was mainly due to this fact that I decided to pick up this book and learn trig on my own (as well as review algebra) as I entered calculus and found the need for it absolutely essential, and I'm glad I did. The book is laid out in a very reader-friendly format, which tends to be rare with mathematics textbooks. Each chapter is concise, the examples given are formatted to give a true representation of the end-of-chapter questions. The book does not assume that "the other half" of the information presented is being explained by an instructor, keeping each chapter-section self-contained and easily understood. This is exactly the book I wish I'd had years ago when I began toying with the idea of self-study to prepare for calculus placement tests, and certainly the book I wish I'd had when I took precalculus. I'll be keeping this book, along with the solutions guide, on my bookshelf permanently as a reference book for my calculus classes and beyond.I did not get a chance to try out the companion-software on the CD-ROM, so I cannot give a fair review of it. I can, however, recommend this book to students wanting to do self-study, those wanting a supplement to their existing precalculus textbook, and to teachers looking for a text to use in their classes. Now, if only my calculus textbook was as clear and concise, I'd be in great shape. . .

This is an excellent resource for relearning precalculus after a long time away from school. The book provides lots of real life useful examples demonstrating how precalculus skills are useful in everyday life and various fields, like engineering and science. I am working towards getting my math skills back in shape and this book has been a tremendous help to me.

Want to know what the greatest comic run is in the history of DC comics? It’s Alan Moore’s three years writing Swamp Thing. Yeah, I know. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and art is subjective but read this series and tell me I’m wrong. I had the wonderful fortune to read these comics as they were being published and looking back now I’m not even sure how it happened. I was strictly a superhero comic fan and Swamp Thing was out of my genre but I was probably influenced by the buzz about Alan Moore. I can remember going to the drug store with my grandfather, when he was still alive, picking up Swamp Thing and being mesmerized. I can remember every storyline in the three year span but none more so than the Monkey King featured in this first volume. It’s one of the most horrifying comic stories ever and cemented Alan Moore’s place as a force to be reckoned with in American comics.What Alan Moore did was look at Swamp Thing and find that his origin made no sense so he completely reinvented the character. At the time I wasn’t super thrilled but looking back it was absolutely the right thing to do. Swamp Thing was no longer a man turned into a monster, he was a plant who thought he was a man. One of the most indelible moments in a sea of indelible moments was when the Swamp Thing fully accepted who he was. During a battle between The Monkey King and Ertigan the Demon, Abigail Cable urges Swamp Thing to flee as there are two monsters and Swamp Thing replies ‘Three Monsters… Run’. 33 years after that line was written I’ve always remembered it. I can remember so many specific lines and particular pieces of art and I’m the type of person who can barely remember comics I read a month ago. That is how hard these stories hit.It would be a terrible miscarriage of justice to not include Stephen Bissette and John Totleben along with Moore as the reasons for success. Alan Moore’s writing is so good that even when paired with artists of modest skills *ahem* Eddie Campbell *ahem* he can still produce a masterpiece but in this case he couldn’t have asked for better artists. Not only are Bissette and Totleben fantastic artists they’re skills perfectly match Alan Moore’s horror writing. Dare I say they outdo even the legendary Bernie Wrightson? There is such an incredible creepiness and otherworldliness to the art and again they shine no greater than in the Monkey King story line. The Monkey King is meant to be the literal embodiment of fear and if you’ve ever read this story you will never forget the image of true horror.If you’ve never read Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing do yourself a huge favor and read every issue. There is NOTHING like it being produced today and Moore puts to shame any modern writers. In fact Alan Moore today cannot match the work he produced in the 80’s. It can be argued whether or not Swamp Thing is his best ever but I would definitely say that this was written during Moore’s peak. This is the greatest era of comic’s greatest writer. Read Swamp Thing, read Watchmen, read Miracleman and prepare to be changed. These are life altering comics and I was privileged to read all of them when they were first published.Let me finish off with a brief rant. What do Green Arrow by Kevin Smith, Identity Crisis and All-Star Batman and Robin have in common? They all have Absolute Editions. Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing does not have an Absolute Edition. Swamp Thing does not have an Omnibus Edition and currently no hard cover edition being sold on Amazon. How is that right? Swamp Thing deserves the royal treatment not some afterthought effort. Swamp Thing is not some historical DC footnote. It is a series that has continued off and on for over 40 years including up and until today. There IS an audience. Do it DC and make it right.

Where to begin? I had first experienced the story of Alan (aka: Swamp Thing) in the 1982 film adaptation starring the well endowed woman of most notably 70's sitcom "Maude" and of films "Creepshow" and John Carpenter's "Escape from New York" Adrian Barbeau.Now because the film introduced me first on the character of DC's ST, it did not inject interest in checking out the books since I felt Marvel's "Man-Thing" was the original "muck of yuck." But it was always in the back of my mind of probably taking a stab at it someday.Well, after the success of the tv show version it still did not hit me to view the book history, BUT now I'm a full fledge fan and DAMN PROUD OF IT TOO. From the beautiful illustrations to the creepy, yet piercing narrative and/or the cast of multi-layered characters of goth-ridden and psychological paradoxes is a work of art, in more detail and abstract imagination to enter into this world as a participant then a reader only.The utilization and integration of guest stars were well chosen and executed as support but never to overshadow ST, such as: The Justice League, The Demon/Jason Blood and even Arcane. I was really taken by the explanation of what ST is and how its origin is reinterpreted with more empathy and compassion then just as another human casualty.I'm looking forward to reading the rest of Alan Moore's take on this life of plants and vegetation for a long time!

I had no familiarity with swamp thing in terms of origin or his associated case of characters. I only got these books because Moore wrote them.With that in mind, the collection starts with issue 20 which Moore authored but does have some hang over story lines and a lot of characters I was unfamiliar with. They are clArified further is future volumes but it does make the first volume difficult to comprehend on first reading.But the book is amazing and I would highly recommend to any comic book fan.

This takes the Swamp Thing story in a direction I didn't see coming. Originally released when I was quite young, my first attempt to read it was around the age of 9 in the form of a graphic novel picked up by one of my parents at a garage sale.Needless to say I was too young to understand what Mr. Moore was conveying to his audience. But that didn't stop me from enjoying somewhat the Swamp Time movie and loving the Swamp Thing television show that aired around that same time.Reading this today gives me a better appreciation for comic book writing. I mean, I knew that writing was important, but seeing it really shine in this way is just something truly masterful.I hear there are five more volumes by Moore. I'm not sure when, but I'll be reading those.

Though this wasn't writer Alan Moore's first great comic book work, both V For Vendetta and Marvelman, among others came before, it was his jaw dropping writing on Swamp Thing which perhaps more than anything else propelled him to the level of elite writers in the comic book medium.Aided tremendously by the artwork of Steve Bissette and John Totleben, who joined the series with issue 16 (get those pre-Alan Moore issues as well, they're very much worth your while), this first collected volume features the first eight issues of their collaboration.A highlight is the very second issue presented, "The Anatomy Lesson", which offered an alternate/new origin for the Swamp Thing that radically changed the character without altering any of the past stories presented, including the incredible Len Wein/Berni Wrightson original 10 issue run from the early 1970's.A great start to a great series of issues. Highly recommended.

He graduated magna cum laude from Hofstra University with a degree in engineering and summa cum laude from Brooklyn Law School, where he was the research editor of the Brooklyn Law Review. Kenneth Fraser really knew how to do an excellent job explaining Robotics. My children are very fascinated with robots and just building things and knowing how they work. This book has helped me get closer to my children by us learning how to build a robot together. It explains in easy instructions what you need to do and how you need to do it. This book is very easy to read and follow. I love how it tells the history of robots also. It s so informative my children did not want to put it down. It teaches them not only how to make robots but also the good and bad about robots. I received this book at a discount for an honest review.

Very disappointing - I found grammatical errors from the very beginning. It looks like it was either written in another language and poorly translated or never edited in the first place. There are much better introductions to the subject of robotics available here at Amazon and available for the Kindle. Even for the very low price - I wish I could get my money back.

Informative good for bathroom reading.It helps the curious but not the professional. Not a must have, but a could have.

It gives a good general overview of what makes a robot. A good place to start if you are thinking of this as a new hobby.

Gives you a basics conceptual background in robotics but doesn't give you any detailed descriptions on how to build a robot.

Good if you like grammatical errors and grand generalizations. Was this ever proof read and can I get a refund?? There is no real information in this "book".

This book has not been edited due to its many grammar mistakes. It doesn't go into any type of detail and is not useful to me at all. Look for another book you cheapo's
