Fabulous Teen Hairstyles: A Step-by-Step Guide to 34 Beautiful Styles, by Eric Mayost

From Booklist

Whether prom is coming up, or a wedding, or a fancy party—or even if you’re just sick of ponytail days—this how-to guide from Mayost, a styling pro, offers 34 ways to reinvent tired tresses. But before you get started, you’ll need a few basic items, listed at the front of the book: hair spray, a blow-dryer, bobby pins (“the last thing you want to do is run out of bobby pins”), and so on. On the menu are styles with fun names like Fantastically Flirty, which involves a bow; Cinnamon Bun Sweetie; and Knotty & Nice. Each is accompanied by numbered step-by-step instructions that correspond to numbered full-color photos, plus a snapshot of the finished look. These are not simple styles, so prepare for some trial and error; each has 14 to 15 steps, and all will require an extra set of hands. The models featured throughout range in age from preteen (ribbon styles) to older teens (more sophisticated), so there’s something for everyone. Some pretty hip dos for the nimbly fingered. Grades 6-12. --Ann Kelley

These hair styles are very nice and the book really gives good pictures to go with very good step-by-step descriptions. A nice wide variety of styles to choose from, so you won't get bored with this book very quickly. I purchased a used copy, and it is in really good condition. No missing pages, or tears, or markings in the book.

Has lots of choices for younger girls, tweens, and teens. My 12-yr old grand-daughter loves it! Good pictures, and easy to follow instructions. She's had fun trying them out with her friends. And she'll be able to use it into her highschool years.

my teen daughter loves this book

Got this for my teen granddaughter. She and her friends love it and have been trying all the styles to be ready for the new school year!

I love this book, my daughter is 10 and it shows elegant, simple hairstyles. She will love it Christmas morning. As for customer service, I accidentally ordered two and when I went to return, was told to keep the extra and still receive a full refund. Will definitely order from this vendor again!

I bought this for my niece. It has a lot of really cute styles. These styles are ones that someone else will need to do for her. Some she can do by herself if she knows how to French braid her hair. Other styles she WILL need someone else's help. But they are so cute.

We bought this for our niece. She and her friends enjoy doing each other's hair. Good thing all the girls have long hair since that is what most styles require. This will be great for all those school dances and special events.

Great ideas for long hair. Skip if you have short hair.

Harold Schechter has done the research and presented it in a biography that answers most questions the average reader would have about one of Americas most notorious child killers and torturers. What he says is always based on the facts he has uncovered. For example, letters written by the boy killer in jail, though not found for many years, show that he was fascinated by corporeal punishment and torture. The mind of a boy psychopath is revealed in this book. Yet Schechter never indulges in morbid speculation or exaggeration beyond what his research suggests.

In another of Harold Schechter scholarly but so very readable books about serial killer, he points out that the good old days were not particularly beautiful, clean and pure, and free of violent serial killers, Jack the Ripper being an exception. With sewage and industrial waste dumped in rivers, lakes, and the ocean; the incredible amount of manure produced by horse-driven transport; the deplorable conditions found in 'the little red schoolhouse,' where the student-teacher ratio in large city school systems would cause current teachers to seek a different profession even it was flipping burgers; no sane person not blinded by nostalgia would consider 'the good old days' particularly good. Whatever problems plague us today--drugs, gangs, massacres of the innocent by the deranged, sensationalism in the media, corruption in our government--existed in the past. And that includes the serial killer, especially "Killer Kids." Murderous juveniles didn't suddenly appear with Columbine; like the poor, they have always been with us.Schechter recounts the life of one such "killer kid:" Jesse Pomeroy, called by the Boston press in 1872 the "Boy Torturer" among other names. He had tortured over a half-dozen children and butchered two more by the time he was fourteen. By the time he was captured Jesse Pomeroy was to become known as the "Boston Boy Fiend." And fiend he was as Schechter aptly proves in this tale of Jesse's reign of terror in 1870s Boston. As with all of Schechter's books about true crime, I recommend this one for it's fine writing, detailed psychological insights, and the strong sense of place that the author always evokes.

i read the true story of the psycho in the 1950's by the same author. these crimes happened in the 1870s. if there is one thing history teaches us, is that there where a lot of un reported crimes happening in those days. people just disappeared.i believe there where probably several people miss treated growing up and becoming killers as they aged.good thing today we have forensics. i recommend this book on history education alone.

Very well done-- factual, concise, and fascinating if you like true crime.

I'm from the Boston area, and while my whole family is in Chelsea (the site of much of the action) I had only heard about Jesse Pomeroy while reading The Alienist by Caleb Carr. I was quite excited to find out about Schechter's new book (thanks Amazon!). I actually became interested in true crime after the Columbine shootings, and have been reading about children who kill. From Mary Bell to the Liverpool boys who killed a toddler, to the Florida kids who killed the local bully, this subject has been endlessly facinating to me. Ok, so maybe it is a bit gruesome too. But I will say that with this book, Schechter hits the nail on the head. Children who kill other children have been with us for a long time, and we continue to give the same lame excuses: the media (for Jesse that was dime novels, for our recent murders its the movies and video games that are blamed), single mothers, and just plain evil. This book does not answer the question of why, but we get a glimpse into the mind of one of these child killers. It is quite chilling. Schechter's research is awesome and his writing style is engaging and his message is clear (and frightening) the next fiend could be living next door, playing in the sandbox! If this book and subject matter are of interest to you, I also highly recommend Cries Unheard: Why Children Kill; The Story of Mary Bell.

I had never heard of this person before. I appreciate the correlaries made between violent youth them and now.

Thus was an excellently researched book about a very twisted individual. Pretty much everything!!

This was a fascinating book, as all of Schechters' books are but this one, perhaps because the boy was so young, really makes you go "wow, some people are just insane". It gives you a glimpse back in time to when it happened by painting a visual picture for you and then takes you into the psyche of those involved. Great book. Great story that is really, not well known and should be.

The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time, by Jeffrey Sachs

Review

"Jeffrey Sachs is that rare phenomenon: an academic economist famous for his theories about why some countries are poor and others rich, and also famous for his successful practical work in helping poor countries become richer. In this long-awaited, fascinating, clearly and movingly written book, he distills his experience to propose answers to the hard choices now facing the world." —Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel"Book and man are brilliant, passionate, optimistic and impatient... Outstanding." —The Economist"If there is any one work to put extreme poverty back onto the global agenda, this is it." —Publishers Weekly, starred review "Paul Wolfowitz should read Jeffrey Sachs’s compelling new book." —Fareed Zakaria, Newsweek “Professor Sachs has provided a compelling blueprint for eliminating extreme poverty from the world by 2025. Sachs’s analysis and proposals are suffused with all the practical experience of his twenty years in the field—working in dozens of countries across the globe to foster economic development and well-being.” —George Soros, financier and philanthropist"Sachs proposes a many-pronged, needs-based attack...that is eminently practical and minimally pipe-dreamy...A solid, reasonable argument in which the dismal science offers a brightening prospect for the world's poor." —Kirkus "This is an excellent, understandable book on a critical topic and should be required reading for students and participants in public policy as well as those who doubt the problem of world poverty can be solved." —Mary Whaley, Booklist

#36,700 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Could the world end poverty within the next 10 years? Yes!Do the people in power have the will to do it? No!That's the tragedy. The rancid stench of human greed runs deep.Since writing his book, Sachs has attempted to put some of his recommendations into practice and discovered that his optimism was, sadly, a bit naive.I was hoping the book would place a greater emphasis on the human aspect of poverty--the profound, unnecessary suffering it causes and the the moral imperative to end it. Instead, Sachs writes the book like a policy proposal (that's probably how he's used it); he doesn't tell many compelling human stories, he spends a great deal of time discussing his own career and then lays out, in specific terms, recommendations on how to address poverty in the world's most deprived regions. It's not the page-turner it should be.Nonetheless, compliments to the author for having the vision to write such a humane book, to investigate how such an idealistic goal might be possible, and to provide a brief--and fascinating--history of the world economy to delineate how things got to be where they are.Poverty may not end anytime soon, but with visionaries like Sachs leading the charge, we might at least begin to move in the right direction.

There aren't any "I's" in the word "development," but there are plenty in this 2005 bestselling book on development by "Economist to the Stars" Jeffrey Sachs. The professor presents his personal vision of a grand plan to quickly eradicate extreme poverty, as though indigence was an easily treatable form of small pox. If someone would just give him a check for $1 trillion to spend over the next decade the ill of extreme poverty around the world would be sent to the dustbin of history. He writes: "The wealth of the rich world, the power of today's vast storehouses of knowledge, and the declining fraction of the world that needs help to escape poverty all make the end of poverty a realistic possibility by the year 2025."In the first third of "The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time," the author introduces his readers to a truly fascinating character, an intrepid man of integrity and unusual brilliance, with the ability to grasp simple and achievable roadmaps for alleviating poverty where others of immense education and experience see nothing but a tangled and unsolvable puzzle. Small wonder that many heads of state and ministers of finance from countries as diverse as Bolivia, Poland and Malawi have come knocking at his door, veritably hat-in-hand and on bended knee, begging him to lend his inimitable genius to the cause of their benighted land. The character's name is Professor Jeffrey Sachs. And he has a plan to save the world from abject poverty. Consider this exert (and note the use of the first person): "I reject the plaintive cries of the doomsayers who say that ending poverty is impossible. I have identified specific investments that are needed; found ways to plan and implement them; shown that they can be affordable; and addressed the counsels of despair who claim that the poor are condemned by their cultures, values, and personal behaviors."In fairness, Sachs isn't the only hero in his own story. In fact, he's a big fan of any important person who is a big fan of his. For instance, Sachs writes that collaborators in Poland, Bronislaw Geremek, Jacek Kuron, and Adam Michnik, "are giants in the worldwide struggle for human rights"; his ally Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland , Director General of the World Health Organization, is "one of the world's most skilled political leaders"; UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is "the world's finest statesman"; while Harvard colleague Paul Farmer is "a saint of global health." Evidently, the only thing remotely as impressive as being Jeffrey Sachs himself is somehow helping Jeffrey Sachs promote his vision and work.Snarky comments aside, "The End of Poverty" is absolutely a book of value and importance, even though I don't necessarily subscribe to the author's central hypothesis that solving global hunger is a simple, yet expensive trick. And I certainly reject his egocentric approach to the topic, that is often grating -- embarrassing actually. In the foreward, written by U2 front man and celebrated humanitarian Bono, the rock star tells a story of being approached by a flight stewardess while traveling with Professor Sachs. Bono humbly commented that the autograph seeker should instead be asking for Sachs' signature as it will certainly be worth more in time. I can't help but imagine Professor Sachs shaking his head in agreement with this preposterously flattering statement.Nevertheless, Sachs makes many valid points and helpful insights in this book. One of the very best is his argument in favor of "clinical economics." He compares contemporary development economics to physicians in the 18th century, prescribing leeches to bleed the sick, committing much harm and very little good. The professor's wife is a pediatrician and he's learned a lot from observing her work. He argues that five principles from medical triage should be applied to development economics: 1) an economy, like the human body, is a complex system where the failure of one system can quickly and easily cascade to others; 2) there is a fundamental importance in differential diagnosis that allows the practitioner to tap into the root cause of a common symptom (e.g. fever/poverty); 3) development, like our health, is a "family affair," and the economist needs to ask what the industrial world family can do to help the brother sick economy; 4) the economist, like any good doctor, must monitor and evaluate for outcomes, not just inputs (i.e. what's been done); and 5) the need to develop professional standards and responsibilities for the economist akin to the physician's Hippocratic oath (i.e. the economist needs to truly understand their "patients" - study their history and culture - and feel ownership for their health and well-being).Second, Sachs places particular emphasis on the criticality of physical geography. He first gained appreciation for this fact when advising the Bolivian government in the 1980s. I know from my firsthand experience in southern Afghanistan that grand dreams for economic rehabilitation easily founder on the rocky shoals of geographic isolation.Much like other book on economic development that ostensibly are not about sub-Saharan Africa, but really are all about sub-Saharan Africa (e.g. Paul Collier's "The Bottom Billion"), Sachs pays special attention to this benighted region, even though his goal is to eradicate extreme poverty globally. So why is Africa so desperate? Sachs quickly rejects two favored explanations from both the political Right and Left: 1) African governments are too corrupt (Sachs: no, many Asian countries, such as India, Indonesia and Bangladesh have been more corrupt and yet have achieved economic growth); and 2) colonial exploitation has devastated Africa (Sachs: no, many countries in Asia suffered just as much, if not worse). So then what plagues Africa? Sachs says it's the 3 D's: disease (AIDS and malaria, specifically), drought (unreliable irrigation) and distance (most Africans live in isolated, inland villages without access to navigable rivers). So is there any hope for poor sub-Saharan Africa? Sachs says, "YES!" But it will require an integrated approach - or "package investments" - backed by major and consistent financial support from the rich countries. He uses the rural, impoverished Kenyan village of Sauri to demonstrate his point. The farmers in Sauri (and just about all the families are farmers) are caught in a classic poverty trap. Their income is so low that they can't afford to buy critical fertilizers or medical attention. Thus, crops are reduced or fail, while family members are struck down by malaria or worse, forcing families to pull children out of school to help gather water or fuel wood. Economic growth for these families is worse than stagnant; it's negative. Sachs argues that a "big push" in 5 interconnected development interventions is all that is needed to get these poor communities on the first rung of the development ladder. "If a country trapped beneath the ladder," he writes, "with the first rung too far off the ground, the climb does not even get started. The main objective of economic development for the poorest countries is to help these countries to gain a foothold on the ladder." For a mere $70/person per year a village like Sauri can be boosted to the first rung of the ladder with strategic investments in: 1) agriculture (mostly fertilizers and nitrogen rich tree plantings); 2) basic health (village technician); 3) education (primary and functional); 4) power/transport/communication (grid power, roads, cell phones); and 5) sanitation (clean drinking water). Sachs claims that a village like Sauri can be saved for a mere $350K per year. "Foreign assistance is not a welfare handout," he stressed, "but is actually an investment that breaks the poverty trap once and for all."And here lies the rub with this book for me. The professor lays out a clear, albeit ambitious program of packaged, interconnected investments. He also quantifies what it might cost for a very specific village, thus remaining true to his call for "clinical economics" that treats each patient's case as unique. Yet, this experiment, which is both remarkably cheap (you couldn't get $5M from the Gates Foundation to prove out the model in Sauri?!) and absolutely critical to his core hypothesis, was evidently not followed up upon. He makes much of his visit to Sauri, the passion and earnestness of its people, the clarity of what needed to be done, the affordability of the needs...but that's the last we hear of this central test case.He goes on to chastise the Western World, the United States especially, for a general failure to live up to their financial and political commitments made in support of the Millennial Development Goals. Specifically, the West pledged to devote 0.7% of GNP to official development assistance (ODA), the most flexible and useful form of economic development contribution according to Sachs. For the United States, that would be growing foreign aid from the 2005 range of $15B (0.14% of GNP) to $75B, or roughly 50% more than the annual budget for the entire U.S. State Department.Sachs argues that helping the extreme poor is absolutely achievable. First, the global population of extreme poor (those caught in negative economic growth) is "only" 1 billion, which he claims is a manageable figure. Second, he is focused only on "extreme" poverty, those unable to provide the basic necessities of a healthy life, not the "relative" poor who can't afford cable and an iPhone. Third, the situation can be effectively addressed by targeted and achievable projects, mainly roads, power, soil, water and sanitation. Fourth, the new super rich in the western world can afford to pay the bill for these investments almost completely on their own. And, fifth, our available tools, especially technology, are stronger than ever. Despite these qualifications, Sachs' plan is wildly ambitious. Indeed, rival New York-based economist William Easterly hints in his 2006 counter-thesis "The White Man's Burden: Why the West's Efforts to Aid the Rest Have Done So Much Ill and So Little Good" that Sachs has "delusions of grandeur." He argues that Sachs' "plan to end world poverty shows all the pretensions of utopian social engineering," and goes on to negatively cite comparisons of "The End of Poverty" to the writings of discredited nineteenth century utopian Robert Owen.Sachs estimates that the total investment per person required is roughly $110. He further estimates that even individuals suffering extreme poverty could contribute $10 per year to their own salvation and that their cash strapped governments could reasonably scrounge up another $35 per citizen in the form of taxes to support the program. That leaves $65 per person ($100 - $10 - $35 = $65) to be provided by ODA. Sachs suggests that the total ODA investment would be split roughly 1/3 to health, 1/3 to energy, 1/5 to education, and the rest distributed to sanitation and other needs. In 2002, gross foreign aid amounted to $76B, but Sachs says that even this number, which he argues is miserly, is misleading, as much of that money was in the form of debt relief ($6B) or import credits or for expensive Western development consultants or for middle income countries he says don't really deserve the money. Sachs estimates that only $12B of that $76B was true ODA targeting the neediest countries. Rather, according to Sachs, the world needs a whopping $195B in true ODA to the bottom billion by 2015 - or an increase of some 16 fold. Over half of this additional money would have to come from the United States, he writes. And for those who argue that ODA does not take into consideration private and NGO investment, Sachs says that those donations, while important and welcome, only total some $3B per year, or roughly 0.03% of GNP. In other words, a relative drop in the bucket. The author suggests at first that the most wealthy Americans - the top 400 income earners in 2000 who made $69B, or roughly the GDP of four African nations with a population of 161 million - pay the lion share of the required investment. Yet, like in many other examples, he doesn't present any kind of plan, but rather offers up a 5% additional income tax on those income earners of more than $200,000. The top 400 earn, on average, $172M a year. How he got from that number to $200,000 a year, I have no idea.He goes on to chastise the United States for spending 30 times more on defense than ODA. That is a reasonable argument to make, I think. Furthermore, he cites a CIA report that shows that there have been 113 cases of state failure from 1957 to 1994, nearly all of which contained the common denominators of high infant mortality, a closed economy, and an authoritarian regime. The vast majority of these events drew U.S. intervention in one form or another, thus arguing for the national security importance of preventing such failures. Or, as Sachs claims, "Eliminating poverty at the global scale is a global responsibility that will have global benefit." And he cites the Marshall Plan (>1% of GNP from 1948 to 1951), Jubilee 2000 Campaign to end indebtedness and PEPFAR as examples of American generosity. But these examples begged the question for me: Were Jubilee 2000 and PEPFAR successful? If so, how? If not, why not? Again, Sachs is silent on these questions. In closing, "The End of Poverty" is an important book and if you have half an interest in the subject you owe it to yourself to read it closely. That said, at the very least, supplement your reading of this book with Easterly's "The White Man's Burden" and Paul Collier's "The Bottom Billion." Sachs deserves to be read with thought and care. But think (or read) twice before you swallow his utopian visions of a world without poverty so close and so easily achievable.

Modern economic growth is accompanied first and foremost by urbanization, that is, by a rising share of a nation's population living in urban areas. There are two basic reasons why economic growth and urbanization go hand in hand. The first is rising agricultural productivity. As food production per farmer rises, an economy needs fewer and fewer farmers to feed the overall population. As food production per farmer rises, food prices fall, inducing farmers and especially their children to seek employment in nonfarm activities. The second is the advantage of high-density urban life for most nonfarm economic activities, especially the face-to-face demands of commerce and other parts of the service sector. Sparsely populated rural areas make good economic sense when each household needs a lot of land for farm production. But they make little sense when people are engaged mainly in manufacturing, finance, commerce, and the like. Once the labor force is no longer engaged mainly in food production, it is natural that the bulk of the population will relocate to cities, drawn by higher wages that in turn reflect the higher productivity of work in densely settled urban areas.Modern economic growth has also produced a revolution in social mobility. Established social rankings-such as the fixed hierarchical divisions between peasants and gentry, or within the Indian caste structure, or in the social orders of nobility, priests, merchants, and farmers that characterized many traditional Asian societies-all unravel under the forces of market-based modern economic growth.Fixed social orders depend on a static and largely agrarian economic setting where little changes in living standards or technologies from one generation to the next. They cannot withstand the sudden and dramatic bursts of technological change that occur during modern economic growth, in which occupations and social roles shift dramatically from one generation to the next, rather than being inherited by sons from fathers and daughters from mothers.p.36

The book arrived with the cover completely covered in scratches. I know the silvery style of the cover makes it more susceptible to scratches, but it was so bad I had to look up my order to see if I accidentally bought a used one . I am keeping the book, but would have been really disappointed if I had bought it for a gift and it arrived looking like this.

The drawings in this book are very cute. Our grandson enjoys this book very much. We have bought several by the same author/illustrator and have been happy with every one of them... Highly recommend.

Great quality! Pages are thick, story is cute and correct. Book will last.

My daughter loves these books (1.5 years). And it's about the only books we can read to her at the pace of her page-turning, because there's so few words on a page!

Sweet book, sturdy. Simple story for young toddler.

It was just a very short book. Just the song, rain rain go away come again another day, the little children want to play, so rain rain please go away. Hooray!Cute, but wish there was more.

Love the artwork of this artist. It's a cute simple book with bright colors. Love the silver background

Love the author, can't complain.

As time would show, this fluff piece by Albom was fiction at its greatest height. The bits about Chris Webber not having the money to buy a hamburger must be read to be believed, since we now know that he was taking hundred thousand dollar-plus payoff from Ed Martin during his two years in Ann Arbor. It strains credulity to think that Mitch Albom could have spent all that time around the Michigan team and not noticed the players driving the fancy cars and flashing around the other signs of obvious wealth such as luxury apartments. And Mitch wonders why he has a credibility issue.

"What scares you Jalen? Death, said Jalen,... because I can't imagine a world without me in it." The cockiness that was the Fab Five is captured perfectly by Mitch Albom in his book the Fab Five; Basketball, Trash Talk and the American Dream. Like Albom's other books Tuesdays with Morrie and 5 People You Meet in Heaven, his story telling engulfs the reader and transforms a normal story into a legendary tale. Albom recognizes the important interaction between people in their actions and conversations and captures that in his writing. This story, the Fab Five, was a great book and one of the best for any sports fan. The "Greatest Class Ever Recruited", as Albom called them, is a great story that is told from behind the scenes, during the Fab Five's historic career at the University of Michigan. The Fab Five by Albom is the finest sports book because Albom's humorous and stylish writing brings to life the events surrounding five freshmen that transformed college basketball. The Fab Five is a book about Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson, the fabulous five freshmen at the University of Michigan. A group assembled in many different ways, each contributing a unique story to what brought them to Ann Arbor. Albom takes his first few chapters describing the intricate lines that connected each player to Ann Arbor. Jalen and Chris were from Detroit and went to UofM because they were always best friends. Ray Jackson and Jimmy King are from Texas. Ray Jackson was noticed accidentally while scouts were in Texas recruiting other players. For Jimmy King, he came to UofM because Juwan Howard, his roommate on a recruiting trip, was going. And to put it all together, Juwan became a Michigan Wolverine because his recently diseased grandmother wanted him to go to UofM. Together they became the Fab Five and marched their way on campus and took the college basketball world by storm making it to back-to-back NCAA men's national championship appearances. The caliber of talent that sounds this book is one for the history books. However, the Fab Five would not be the book it was without the writing and story telling ability of Mitch Albom. Albom has been voted the number one sports writer an unprecedented seven times by the Associated Press Sports Editors. He has hosted a TV show on ESPN and written many famous books as well as a sports column for the "Detroit Free Press". His ability to touch every reader regardless of background is rare. He makes people cry reading Tuesdays with Morrie and people stand up in cheer for the `91 Michigan basketball team in the Fab Five. Undoubtedly, Albom is one of the best writers in American and is writing about one of the best sports teams America has ever witnessed. Albom accurately describes the sequence of events leading five high school seniors to main-stream college freshman superstars. But one of the things that makes this story one for the ages is that while on many teams today it is rare to see two freshmen starting a game, in 1991 the Fab Five were five freshman players who all started on a team that made it to the NCAA men's Championship basketball game. Having five freshman start a national championship game is unheard of and still to this day, unmatched. Albom predicts, "There will never be another group like the Fab Five." Through what brought them to Michigan, through every behind the scenes event, through every exciting and electrifying game, this book comes to life in front of the readers' eyes. As the book progresses the plot thickens for these young athletes as if Albom himself wrote the story. Every big game and tournament game was commentated as if live from the radio. Albom writes, "And with 21 seconds left, Michigan lead by just a basket, 71-69. `No three-point-shots,' fisher yelled." The games brought a sense of involvement for the reader taking them back in time to the game. With writing style that is clear and descriptive, and while combined with the dazzling games provided by the Michigan Basketball team, this leads to a suspenseful, well illustrated book that makes the heart pump and adrenaline rush. While watching the suspenseful games, Albom knew greatness at the very moment it happened and was there to preserve ever moment of history in his book; a book about kids who became "The Greatest Class Ever Recruited." They had become the most popular names and faces in college basketball. In Ann Arbor, they sold jerseys and shorts for a hundred and fifty dollars total; "They sold out in a heartbeat," Albom wrote. Stories like these make this book different than any other sports book, a book written while the events occurred with detailed stories nobody else could get. He also wrote about that one game they all walked onto the court with their fashionably baggy shorts, black socks and black shoes revolutionizing college basketball, and he was there to catch every story and detail. Black socks, black shoes and baggy shorts all surprised people watching college basketball. Later looking back, people would contribute these five freshmen as revolutionizing basketball and creating its image today. Albom knew this and felt it was necessary to capture their uniqueness in this book. Mitch Albom, like the rest of the world knew greatness while it was happening and the passion and enthusiasm that he wrote with to illustrate that greatness he was witnessing is another example of why this book is so fabulous. Albom also included inside stories, taking the reader to a place only a few were able to see. Inside the games, inside the practices and inside the family that was the Fab Five. When Jalen walked in the first day as a freshman and announced, "Freshmen verse ya'll," everyone in the gym was stunned. Where most freshmen come in to find themselves at the bottom of the barrel, these freshmen came in and ran right to the top. After saying, "Freshmen verse ya'll," the five freshman went on to win three scrimmages against the upper classmen. Albom wrote, "The Fab Five has been born." While many people could watch the televised games and see for themselves the spectacle surrounding these freshmen, he took this audience backstage and incorporated these stories that give the reader more than they could otherwise see. Stories about crazy pranks to trash talking rants and bizarre interviews to the baggy shorts and black socks and shoes, is why Fab Five gives the reader more than a sports book. It gives the reader a legendary, and even though no previous knowledge is necessary a substantial amount of time is essential because putting the book down once the readers starts if difficult. The Fab Five is a humorous, entertaining and well written book, but furthermore, it is an inside look at one of the greatest college basketball stories. Mitch Albom, as one of America's most heralded writers, gives one of his best writing performances for his perfectly illustrated, historical tale of "The Greatest Recruiting Class Ever." He captivated my attention and sparked my interest in Michigan Basketball because of his urban style humor and story telling ability. While most other historical accounts tend to be boring, Mitch Albom captivates his readers and provides one of the best books about sports; a must read for any sports fan. Albom quoted Jalen Rose, "they'll be talking about us for 20 years." This is true about the Fab Five and the Fab Five will be talked about for many years to come

Gift for someone else. There was a sticker on back that even with carefully taken off tore off part of the cover. It did not come with the cover as you see in this picture. It was just a blue board book with no cover. It was Fab Five inside and she did add to her collection. I wished it had the cover.

I love the book, which reminds me of when I was little watching the Fab Five play. When read right before and after watching the documentary, it makes it even better. The thing that irks me is the tone of the old, white sportswriter (I know, Albom is more than a sportswriter now) portraying inner-city life and in-game trash talk. It makes me cringe and there isn't a page that goes by without that feeling. It made this book very hard to finish, but it's worth powering through.

As a man who went to college during the fab five era, it was a cool read, and walk down memory lane of a time when I couldn't trade in my basketball short shorts, for a pair of the fab five long baggy shorts fast enough, these 5 kids really did touch and change the worlds of so many people!!! This is a well written book that really engulfs the reader, highly recommended! Especially if you are a Michigan fan!

Loved the ESPN movie and have watched it over and over. Surprisingly, the book is way better! A very detailed and close look at the Fab Five (and their teammates) and Coach Fisher personally. A must-have for any Michigan fan.

Mitch Albom does it again! A fantastic insight into the group that changed basketball to what it is today (for good or bad according to some). I have been waiting to read this for nearly 20 years since it came out, and finally got the chance and bought it. No disappointment, and reading this much later, it was a wonderful stroll down memory lane. Mitch paints a picture that allows you to visualize all the details. You always watched them and either loved or hated their brash attitudes, but you cannot deny their impact. Now know what went on behind the scenes. Thanks Mitch, keep up the good work.

One of the best books I've ever read, check out the ESPN 30 for 30 about the Fab Five, this goes more in depth but the documentary is very good as well and features Mitch Albom.

The Title Is WRONG! It should read Towers in the North, not towns, big difference. Great resource. Some excellent color plates and there are various diagrams throughout.

Excellent reference book for anyone interested in Scotland and the brochs. Well written, and although technical, the book is not a hard read. Great illustrations complement the text.

Superb overview of the Iron Age Atlantic Roundhouse tradition. Full of excellent photographs and drawings. I have used this book to guide several trips to Neolithic Scotland, including this year's trip to the Outer Hebrides!
