About the Author

Helen Thompson is a nationally known writer whose areas of specialty are interior design, architecture, kitchen design, and food. Helen was formerly a food writer and editor for Texas Monthly magazine, where she worked for 17 years. She was also the Texas city editor for Metropolitan Home magazine for 14 years. While at Metropolitan Home, Helen wrote about houses, restaurants, and gardens and produced many of the features shot in Texas during those years. She has also written and produced articles for Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living, Western Interiors, Traditional Home, Veranda, Country Home, and many other magazines. I keep this book on my night table. ("Next Of Kin" and "Nim Chimpsky" are my very favorite books of all time). I have read this book more than once. I believe it should be required reading in schools across the country. The chimpanzee language studies of the '60-'70's proved how intelligent chimpanzees truly are. You will never forget the lives of Washoe and her family: Moja, Dar, Tatu and Loulis. These chimpanzee's, along with other chimps that my Dr. Roger Fouts taught, communicated with humans by speaking in American SIgn Language (ASL). (Nim Chimpsky is another chimpanzee from this time.)Please, I urge everyone to read this book. It will change you forever, for the good. With Chimpanzees in the wild being endangered species and with our government promising to Retire their chimpanzees who have been suffering in their medical labratories for decades — it is time for all us to better understand our Next Of Kin.Today, Tatu and Loulis are the last surviving chimpanzees from the language studies programs. They reside happily in Sanctuary at the Fauna Foundation (http://www.faunafoundation.org).

"Next of Kin: My Conversations with Chimpanzees" is one of the most amazing, heartbreaking, and inspirational books I've ever read. The book is written by Roger Fouts, a primatologist who devoted his life to studying the language patterns of chimpanzees. While in graduate school, Roger was introduced to Washoe, a precocious young chimp who became fluent in American Sign Language. Eventually "Project Washoe" expanded to include many chimpanzees, all who learned to communicate with humans using ASL and demonstrated unique personalities, complex emotions, and astounding intelligence.I've always been a big animal lover, but reading this book taught me so many things that I never knew before. Anyone who questions an animal's ability to think or feel will get a sharp reality check after reading this book. Chimpanzees are people, too, just as much as human beings are. Unfortunately, the majority if humans in this world don't agree with that logic, and thousands of animals, including chimpanzees, are routinely kidnapped from their natural habitats and bred in captivity for the sole purpose of participating in biomedical research. In many cases, medical laboratories house animals in appalling conditions and literally torture them to death. "Next of Kin" details the horrors that go on behind closed doors at biomedical laboratories, and chronicles the steps Fouts and other animal activists have taken to protect chimpanzees from being treated inhumanely.I absolutely loved this book. Reading it made me feel close to Washoe and her chimpanzee friends, even though I never met any of them before. (Sadly, Washoe passed away last fall at the age of 42, but I hope to visit members of her family at the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute in Washington someday.) Parts of this book are incredibly depressing and difficult to read, but hopefully learning about the terrible ways animals are treated will inspire people to take action. I admire everything that Fouts, his family, and his colleagues have done to protect chimpanzees, who are our next of kin on the great evolutionary scale. I hope other readers get as much out of this book as I did.

There's a good reason this book is rated so highly, and that's because it's a very well told story.The story follow Roger Fouts' career, from a young graduate student, to a world authority on chimpanzee communication and behavior. Where Jane Goodall got to observe wild chimps in Gombe, and study their natural lives, Fouts works with "domestic" chimps, with the goal of teaching them sign language, and studying how they learn and use it.The books is very entertaining and very engaging, and at times, heart breaking. It described the plight of chimps used in medical research, how these intelligent, sentient creatures spend their whole lives, which can be decades, in small cages with no contact with their own kind, and no mental stimulation.Through his career are trials and troubles, but Fouts always tries his best to overcome them, while keeping his chimpanzee charges interests in mind. Unfortunately, this leads him to be forced to choose between his chimp friends, and his fellow scientific peers.The most touching part was his reunion after a 13 year separation with his friend Booee, who remembered him, and remembered his signs, though he presumably hadn't used them in so long. Booee was taken away from him, and used in a biomedical lab, where he was injected with Hepatitis.An interesting point is made in regards to humans using animals for tests, and that is that we seek to dehumanize that which we don't fully understand. Humans have used humans for slaves, Nazis used Jews for medical experiments, and up until the 1970s the US government was running a syphilis study on unknowing black men. All of this is condemned now, and is unthinkable in today's world, but as we move from one thing, we replace it with another, and it seems that we've moved to chimps now.I believe in the future we'll look back and not be able to imagine how we imprisoned and experimented on our evolutionary cousins. I just hope that day isn't too far off.The book ultimately ends on a fairly happy note, but the separations are agonizing to read about, and I found my eyes welling with tears on more than one occasion. Despite that (because of that?) this book is one of my favorites in my library, and I highly suggest it.

This wasn’t about Lean or any particular methodology – it was about how to be successful at our jobs.”This is a book about how to build cars really fast, how to solve problems, how to lead others but mainly, how to think. It’s an entire ecosystem that is, by definition, foreign. Most people are familiar with the notion that Toyota’s production system (TPS) is the secret sauce that made them the most profitable automobile maker in the world, but this is a rare look into that system as it was recreated for the first time on American soil. It turns out that profits were not the goal — of course they were confirmation and a really, really nice side benefit!A New Way of ThinkingTracey and Ernie Richardson were young when they met up with the hiring managers of the Kentucky production plant — Tracey was just 18. To help teach these American hires, Toyota supplied rotating teams of Japanese teachers. They mentored, instructed, allowed them to fail, encouraged them to practice and then left before they could soak up too much American culture.This is the Richardsons’ story of how they absorbed The Toyota Production System, became leaders themselves, relabeled TPS the “Thinking People System” and brought it into the world around them. The application at the Kentucky plant is specific to that plant and that time, but there’s a lot the Average Josephine can take to heart.“I Work For You” Mentality of LeadersLeaders were tasked with making themselves replaceable. Not the first thing that comes to mind when laboring to become the best at what you do, but it was a fundamental Toyota strategy to ensure employees thrived. Their attitude was that if you were not setting your people up to grow and master new skills, then they would become frustrated and stagnate.This “Servant-Leader” approach meant leaders were leading and learning at the same time. A comment from Fran Vesica, a Project Manager from the Education Sector sums this up nicely: “Being a servant leader is not having all the answers, but it is about asking all the right questions.” Leaders should be learning and improving their thinking while developing those who report to them. In contrast, the unspoken fabric of most organizations requires management to always know more than their direct reports — and act like it.Beware “Big Company Disease”Toyota was never satisfied with how they were doing. Being best was not good enough because “their greatest fear was something they called, ‘big company disease,’ which is really apathy.” That meant they had to constantly raise the bar. At a process level, that meant establishing a standard and then immediately setting a new target and working to create a better standard. At a leadership level that meant as soon as you were comfortable in your job, you’d be promoted or transferred into a position that would be a challenge for you. The mantra was to “always be uncomfortable.”What’s the Equation?Part of internalizing their experience was coming up with their own approach. The titular equation refers to their take on the underlying elements of a successful, problem-solving culture which they boil down to:GTS6 + E3 = DNAUnpacking this reveals the two pillars of Toyota culture — Discipline and Accountability — which accounts for the “DNA.” GTS6 represents acronyms for the 6 elements of problem solving:Go to See: Visit the work as it takes place — test assumptionsGrasp the Situation: Ask questions to uncover the facts — not opinionsGet to Solution: Get to root cause and get consensus on changesGet to Standardization: Establish the new “best way”Get to Sustainability: Use leading indicators to monitor the new processGet to Stretch: Raise the bar — Always be improvingAnd the last piece, E3, refers to “Everyone, Everyday Engaged.” Basically, people come first and all teaching, mentoring and improvements revolve around developing employees and leaders. Everyone is judged on their ability to help others succeed. Again, contrast that with cultures in which people “manage up” and work to secure their own career paths as opposed to helping those around them. Excellent review of what we did at the start up of TMMK....in fact I learned several things I didn't do and and several things I did wrong! Really could have understood what our trainers was wanting us to do if I had this book at that time. Tracey and Ernie did a excellent job explaining and breaking down the steps that made TMMK such a great success. After retiring from Toyota after 26 years I now catch myself watching and thinking about how to Kaizen different business such as restaurants, bars and various other businesses! Great job Tracey and Ernie!

The insights from other professionals that are shared throughout the book are equally helpful.The authors do a good job of emphasising the value of the thinking behind the system ahead of the tools, in particular the attitude towards people. I recommend this to anyone considering leveraging the lean system or anyone interested in deploying a sustainable management framework.On the other hand if you're looking for a prescriptive checklist to instant greatness, this may not be the book for you.

Written by two former long-term Toyota employees who started on the assembly line and rose through the leadership ranks at the KY assembly plant, this is an important piece in the effort to disseminate the power of the Toyota Way. It's a fascinating look into the experiences of two insiders and how working for Toyota transformed their thinking, both personally and professionally. Excellent and well written book that captures the electric atmosphere of TMMK and the very essence of the "Toyota Way" in a creative way (the equation is great way to remember the basics). Book was easy to read, no text book atmosphere. The use of real world examples from the authors' many years of experience at Toyota and guest writers effectively communicated the points being made on how to understand and implement continuous improvement in any organization. The section on Leadership was an added bonus and a must read for leaders and those who want to be leaders in any organization: excellent explanation on what leadership should be – servant leadership!Excellent job by the authors on sharing the life time knowledge they learned and giving back to those who want to grow. Highly recommended read!

Excellent presentation and very knowledgeable material, the authors did an excellent job unfolding their case. My biggest take away is how this is not discussed more openly and routinely anywhere else. Why is the world so closed minded to other possibilities? What a bunch of Lemmings the Human Race has become.Are we still ruled by Vatican Rome from the Dark Ages? Why do people follow with blind obedience so blindly? What dark and sick Geo-political group, Religion or other conspirators have kept the truth hidden from the entire population of Earth? Laws should be passed against withholding truth for just the few and the privileged. And just what punishment will be truly justified for holding back the entire Human Race?

I wasn't familiar with Richard Hoagland before reading this. Normally I would've left a title like this alone, with such a heavy Masonic focus on the cover, but I was recommended the book by someone after a particularly good new age music event, so I decided to give it a try. First off, this book really needs an editor. There are multiple introductions, and a lot of poorly-paced twists and turns about torsion fields and CompuServe forums bolted onto Richard Hoagland's central theses : ideas which, given that Hoagland has been on the talk show circuit since the late 1980s, have since been digested by the ravages of time into what now seems like a collection of unsurprising, phoned-in tropes.Yes, the gang's all here - Freemasons, Scientologists, UFOs, an extraterrestrial interplanetary empire, JFK, The Golden Dawn, Nikola Tesla, Paperclippers, Osiris, The OTO, government coverup of recovered alien artifacts, government coverup of a source of unlimited free energy, ..... etc, etc. As one who does enjoy putting on my waders for some muddin', though, my issue is the absolutely extraordinary leaps which Hoagland expects the reader to make. It's almost as if the book was written by the last of a dying breed of UFO huckster for an audience seeking validation of their own pet ideas.Anyway, three interesting salvaged tidbits which I now present to you, the reader :First, just for fun, noted Free-Energy Guy Bruce DePalma was the elder brother of director Brian De Palma.Second, a point on Hadley Cantrell's 'Invasion From Mars : A Study in the Psychology of Panic', which deals with the reaction to the 1938 broadcast of 'War of the Worlds': Hoagland asserts that the Rockefeller Foundation commissioned this report, published in 1940, from Princeton University. Nineteen Forty!!! If this is true, it may represent the earliest known instance of institutional interest by the Rockefeller family in UFOs, which continues to the present day: UFO research is a top-shelf way to launder money because no one knows or wants to dispute how much anything costs. Given the Rockefellers' ample and well-documented interest in the subject, that it might've originated in the old Orson Welles panic feels extremely through the looking glass - "Human Potential" and "Scenes in the Valley" researchers, take note.Finally, comments attributed to Nikita Khrushchev by his son Sergei that JFK was engaged in back-channel efforts to establish a joint US-USSR space program for several months preceding his assassination. Sergei Khrushchev is an engineering professor and Brown University fellow, with no reason to risk his position as a scholar to make up lies about his father, a public figure.

A fantastic review of the evidence alleging a massive conspiracy to hide the truth of ancient extraterrestrial super-civilization.Unfortunately, Kindle formatting does not display the many photo images adequately. Even on the larger format of an iPad, the images are not clear, nor detailed enough to be viewed in sufficient detail, and their access is often difficult when they fall on the edge of the page. Even viewing the images is more difficult, because regularly the image description is on the following page and the reader has difficulty knowing which image goes with which description!For best appreciation of the material, I would strongly recommend reading the largest printed version available, with glossy photos, which could better make the attempted arguments.

If you follow Hoagland's occasional appearances on Coast to Coast and the postings on his Enterprise Mission website, you'll find most of this book's material is familiar stuff. It's nice to have it all collected in one place, but that apart, I had hoped for more. The explanations provided of his ideas about physics seem to be drawn rather heavily from sources like Tom Bearden and Tesla, and don't seem to be all that cogently expressed here. And what was there made me wonder if he had ever discovered Charles Leadbeater and Anne Besant's book reporting their findings at visualizing the world of the submicroscopic, Interesting torsional resonances to be found in their report.On the other hand, the research the authors did on the dark figures associated with the founding of NASA is well explained, and as frightening as I first remembered these magi to be from other sources I've read on the topic. They don't include some of the reports about von Braun's monstrous treatment of the Jewish slave laborers in his rocket factory caverns while serving the Third Reich.The book's conspiracy theorizing goes from thick to thin in other areas. Masonic rituals? Yea, rah. Moon landing fakery? Not so much. And the dissing given to the late Tom VanFlandern seems a bit petty and spiteful. Makes Hoagland sound like a bit of a thin-skinned narcissist.But maybe it's me that's just imagining things...

As usual, don't depend upon the newspapers or TV news to inform about anything other than the football scores; go directly to the source. Hoagland methodically reveals what so many of us have long suspected. What is so disgusting is that for decades, American citizens have been paying NASA's bills, and in a rush to repay their generosity, NASA continues to keep them in the dark to this day.If people want to know what they've paid for and are not getting, this book enumerates a long list - with photos. But there's more. What did astronauts actually see on the Moon? What's littering the planet Mars? What about 'Data's Head,' secret societies, Egyptian gods, Nazi influence, deliberate lies and clumsy cover-ups?This book was a page-turner. Just when the reader thinks one outrage has been uncovered, tracks lead to yet another. Hoagland is a superb detective; I'm glad he's on 'our' side.

Of all of the "real drawing" (as opposed to cartooning or doodling) books I've ever read or looked through, this is definitely among the top five (at least).It is very accessible. The writing style is conversational and encouraging. The information and techniques are uncomplicated. And I really love that there are seven different options here, with the reader encouraged to settle on whichever best resonates for him.It addresses a significant need in the how-to-draw world. There are plenty of excellent drawing books out there, from very general to very specific. But none of them are of any use if you can't get the basic "object" down on your paper, and most don't really go into detail in that area. In essence, we're often told we need to learn to SEE better, but never given the tools to learn that skill. This book contains those tools.Although this is written for adults, and adults can undoubtedly benefit from it, I like that this is also appropriate for children. My daughter wants to learn to draw, and I have struggled to find appropriate materials for this. Most of the children's drawing books are cartoons, and most of the adult "how to draw" books are so complex as to be overwhelming for her. This is perfect. It's "real," but it's still simple. It's easy to understand. And all of content is age-appropriate (no nude figure-drawing, for instance).I highly recommend this one!

Complete novice here. Great tool to start me off in the direction to becoming someone who can draw more than a stick figure. Lessons move the student to practice daily with increasing detail and the guide to add on to the drawings to become proficient. I have, without a doubt, increased my abilities to draw what I want and be able to look at a subject and figure out what I need to "look at" to make it appear on paper. I use other books and Youtube as my training schools and I have learned a lot about art and "how to".

Clear steps to success for all of us who want to draw without waiting till some future time when we have learned almost all there is to learn. (smile) My first teacher in school taught 30 of us at a time (in a few minutes) how to draw a robin. I was only 6 years old and didn't have superior drawing materials. But I learned to draw a good representation of a robin and have never forgotten how to do that! I have paid good money to good artists who taught "beginning" classes that seemed to me designed for people who already had the language and history and techniques that would be learned in college classes. I learned in those classes but not as much as I have learned from my purchase of the Kindle edition of How to Draw Outlines.SPECIAL NOTE: Due to physical problems that affect my hands most days, I can't hold even the lightest marking instrument (brush, pen, pencil, etc.) for very long at a time. If you have similar problems, I believe that this book may help you do more in less time as it has helped me.I am encouraged and delighted to have found a teaching book that is just right for me!

I've been trying to draw for years. I even took lessons. Somehow it was Kate Berry's book that enlightened me on the simplicity of drawing if I'm going to pursue it seriously. Her methods are encouraging and she discusses each one by providing step by step samples. Thank you Kate Berry for liberating me from my fears.

After having read the book and viewed the drawings I think this will help in drawing for my watercolor painting which I plan to engage in. I'll be putting it to use during vacation.

Reading the book won't magically make you a successful artist, but it definitely does what it sets out to do. It describes the basics of accurately drawing objects. Simple tips and tricks for looking at an object and getting it down on paper well enough to recognize what you've drawn. Useful exercises, good illustrations.

This instruction is working for me even though I have only copied the first sketch--the dog. I will copy it several times in my sketch book before moving on to the next lesson. I used to like pencil sketching when I was a child but gave it up for the most part when a relative made fun of my sketches when I was nine years old. I like the fact that this artist/writer is pretty much self-taught. She knows that some of us are fighting demons from the past and need a great deal of encouragement.

At less than $1, this is a great introduction to drawing with practical wisdom and illustrations to show how its done.
