I'm an avid reader of Historical Fiction, especially books that focus on WWII. So, I eagerly jumped at the chance to read this book. The premise was enticing but overall my feeling about the book could be summed up as 'interested by not invested'. The book is narrated by Astrid and Noa whose personalities and life experiences are quite different. Astrid was a strong main character. She's lived through a lot, she's broken and tough nut to crack. This is in complete contrast to teenage Noa who was overly naive to the point that it was grating. She never thinks things through, claims to love baby Theo yet pawns him off at every opportunity and never seems to struggle with his care even though she has no prior experience and has a new job as a trapeze artist. I just didn't connect with her on any level. This book features a group of people who are trying to escape the Nazis' wrath. This was a dangerous, turbulent time but the war seemed to be just a backdrop to the drama between the characters. Besides the moment when the babies are found in the boxcar (an emotional moment for me - which is described in the book summary), it wasn't as gritty, emotional or tension-filled as I had expected for a book set during WWII. Instead the focus was on the romantic entanglements (one of which came about too quickly to be believable) and melodrama between the characters. And yet this book continued to hold my interest enough for me to continue and find out how things end for this band of misfits. I think the premise was unique and thought the epilogue was quite interesting as Jenoff explains how she came up with the premise of her book based on historical details. The secondary characters were a unique bunch but I wish that they had been used more within the story. For example, the circus master's son was written as a potential bad guy but barely used; the older Jewish man's perspective would have been a benefit to the plot but his story wasn't explored, and the Circus Master's life, as he struggles to keep his circus afloat and help those running from the Nazis, was only hinted at. With the secondary characters' minimal lines and involvement, it was hard for readers to get to know them well enough to care about them. This book had great promise and was touted as a mixture of “The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah and "Water For Elephants" by Sara Gruen. Those are some big shoes to fill and while I think the premise was solid, I found the execution weaker than expected. It started off as a vivid, emotional Historical Fiction read but as the book progressed it became more about the relationships of Astrid and Noa giving the book a lighter Historical Romance feel that happened to be set during WWII. A good read just not as gritty as I had expected. This is a story about survival and family in various forms. With more tension and connection to the characters I would have given this book a higher rating. For people looking for a lighter Historical Fiction read this book is right up your alley.Disclaimer: My sincere thanks to Harlequin and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary e-book copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I just finished this book, and as I wipe away my tears I have to tell you that this is an original, riveting story about courage, love, friendship, and family. A while back, someone asked if there were too many books written about WWII, and my answer was no....there are millions of stories to tell. The Orphan's Tale is a great example of this, telling a story about events and acts of bravery that I knew nothing about. In this masterful tale, Astrid is an aerialist whose family had owned a circus in Germany; but her family was Jewish, and had disappeared when she returned home after being cast aside by her husband, a German officer. Noa is a young girl whose single act of bravery leads her to the circus, an uncommon but welcome refuge for her. This story is told with such passion and enormous heart, with pulse-pounding suspense as Astrid, Noa, and the rest of their circus friends are under constant threat of the Nazis. I highly recommend this book to all book lovers; it is sure to enthrall everyone.

I go through several books a week. As soon as I finish one, I am ready with the next. The Orphan's Tale made me stop, wait, think and want to absorb it before I went on to the next book. I'll admit I am interested in books about WWII and oddly, about historic circus life. This was a fascinating blend of the two, so I was in heaven! This is a book I wish I'd written...the writing, the plot, the characters...I didn't want it to end. Do yourself a favor and read this one.

Based on the glowing reviews, I read this novel as I am a fan of WW II historical fiction. The story managed to capture me but by no means would I call it riveting or written with deep emotion. It's all fairly tenable how the relations come about, how Noa meets Astrid, the circus being the catalyst. Other charcters (Luc, Herr Neuhoff, Gerda, Emmet) play roles that help the story and the conclusion (no spoilers) does account for the fate of all the characters. That all said, I found the writing choppy, lacking a deep felt emotion of the characters (even the main ones) and thought the second half was a bit over-romanticized. Would I recommend it? Yes. Many may find a stronger emotional connection. I did not. So 3 stars for what I thought might be a 4.5 - 5 star going in.

The best book on Memoir Writing I have ever Read!I read this book and marked it up!! It isn't just a fantastic reference guide, it is a thought-provoking look at the Art of Memoir and the ample array of styles, characteristics and qualities a Memoir can take on.When you lose your fear and allow yourself to be intimate with the details of your story, a Memoir can be juicer than the best Fiction novel.I love how Judith elaborates on the import of True Memoir writing and what makes it an incredibly unique genre from other Non-Fiction.Her expertise in writing pushes you to examine the traditional perceptions of the term Memoir and see it in a whole new light. She shares what makes for the most fertile of subjects and getting over any 'grapplings' you might have about how to present your story. She provides value in her book, sharing details about what makes an author's own Memoir writing become something of great value to others. This book is thoughtfully executed down to every example and recommendation-- including answers to critical question a published or an apprentice writer might have.Judith Barrington clearly wrote it with the purest intentions of assisting all true writers.

A great book! I liked Barrington's direct writing style and found the book very useful. (As a note, given its aged 2002 Copyright I almost passed on this book. Nevertheless, after seeing it recommended in a couple of other books I decided to buy it. I am glad that I did.) In combination with Mary Karr's newer book, The Art of Memoir, and some intensive digging through multiple memoir writing blogs, I have found most of the information that I needed.

This book contains a lot of good tips. You can tell the author has done her research. There are almost too many references though to books that most people have not even heard of. While I agree that references need to be made to an extent to show an example, you cannot assume the reader has read them, nor has the time to read all those books. While reading other memoirs is certainly a great research tool, a "how-to" book, should be exactly that. There are lots of good writing tips and exercises that are very helpful. It is evident that the author takes the topic at hand seriously and she herself understand the struggles of story telling, especially when it is a hard topic to discuss, much less write. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to write. I will say though, that while it brushes on the topic of the "Memoir" in the autobiographical sense, it may be more helpful to those who are looking for more help with "memoirs", meaning shorter stories either separate or to be used as a compilation. Either way, this book is definitely helpful to anyone looking to write a book or just brush up on their writing skills.

Great primer with some basics on writing a book -- not an English primer. Best thing was the section in the back, where it discusses how to run a writing group and how to give and receive feedback. Invaluable. Our group used this as the foundation for our group -- very basic, but wonderful to have something that isn't one member's "opinion."

I got this book because I am presently writing a memoir -or memoirs- and I felt I needed some guidance. Or at least reassurance. This, Barrington provides with a lot of clarity without being overly didactic. Legal issues --if not about writing techniques, certainly useful here-- are addressed in the last pages. Although the volume seems to be targeted toward beginning memoir writers, its sections on finding one's own voice, tense choice, selection of memories, as well as the exercises that come at the end of each chapter can also jumpstart the more seasoned authors. Writing is an ever-learning experience. You occasionally need to be reminded of what you already know. Not only can this solidify your own art, but it can deepen it as well. Memoirist Judy Barrington has created here a practical how-to with a writing that flows and never gets boring. And the fact that she provides generous excerpts and excellent references of beautiful memoirs is, in my opinion, a lovely gift that provides additional inspiration to any author writing in that genre.

I have started writing my memoir and have decided to get books that can help me get over some of my writing problems. I am glad to have bought this book. I find this to be very helpful, especially for a beginner like me.I have finished Chapter 3 of my own work and got stuck with Chapter 4. I started writing my memoir last October and glad to know that it takes time even for seasoned writers to finish their own work. One good advice I learned from the author, Judith Barrington, is that when you get stuck with your writing like you have a writer's block you have to take a break - read, talk a walk or do something else - to relax your mind. While reading this book, I got some ideas that require rewriting Chapter 3 of the memoir I am writing and lay down the ground works for Chapter 4 and the subsequent chapters. The exercises in this book will help one planning to write a memoir determine which part of one's life could be potential materials. After reading this book, I can see that there are many parts in our lives that can be turned into books.I highly recommend this book for those who are planning to write memoirs. Barrington has myriads of writing tips that will be of help. One is that you don't really have to be famous to write a memoir. There are stories even in ordinary lives. It's more of a question on how to dig in a potential gold mine.

This book is much more than the typical craft or how-to book on memoir writing. It provides essential guidance, craft pointers, excellent examples drawing from a wide variety of well-known and lesser-known memoirs, and from the author's own experience as a writer and instructor. The exercises are useful, provide insightful tips, and help the user to craft important parts of works or larger pieces. I found every bit of the information useful well paced, helpful, and aimed at an intelligent, serious audience. This is a great book and one that I will return to time and time again.

Great little book to share with children for this election year. It explains the basics on how we elect our present and what the president does in language kids can understand. Goodness know they can't watch TV on this subject, this time around.

This book is written from a child's prespective.... if I were the President I would... It goes through the main duties of a president in an interesting, clear way accomapnied with nice illustrations. I loved that it explained in simple terms that the President does what he things is best (with help of cabinet..), but not everyone agrees. What a great first introduction for 4-8 year olds!

nice book but could use more description of terms used for age appropriate grasp. i suggest explaining some of the terms of art beforehand

Gives a good overview of some of the duties of a president. I like how many children are portrayed as the kid president to reinforce that anybody can become president.

Just as described. Great service.

Definitely and older student book and not for first graders.

Well written story.

As a person with a background in biochemistry and a passionate interest in issues of public policy, I cut my GMO teeth on "Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating," "GMO Myths and Truths: A Citizen's Guide to the Evidence on the Safety and Efficacy of Genetically Modified Crops and Foods, 3rd Edition," "Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods," and "Altered Genes, Twisted Truth: How the Venture to Genetically Engineer Our Food Has Subverted Science, Corrupted Government, and Systematically Deceived the Public," as well as many audio and video lectures on the technical science of recombinant-DNA genetic engineering and its drawbacks and potential consequences. I'm drawn to writing that uses a straight here's-the-facts-and-laws approach, with an index to help the reader keep track of details.Caitlin Shetterly's "Modified: GMOs and the Threat to Our Food, Our Land, Our Future" isn't that kind of book. It is more in the mold of many modern issues-related documentaries, a first-personal form of narrative nonfiction where the author/director plays a significant, sometimes central, role in the story being told. And as such, the book undoubtedly has a broader appeal to many who are not strict GMO-nerds like I am, and in that sense she seems successful at what I believe she is trying to achieve -- a presentation of the issue that is both personal and "balanced."Parts of the book are like a journal of a road trip, focusing on the surroundings and the author's feelings about them and the present situation. Parts of it are akin to feature journalism, where in an interview with a source it is not just the substance that is worthy of mention, but also the ambience of the place, the food, and the clothes, personality, and tastes of the interviewee.Hers is a quest story, rooted in horrendous/relentless health problems that were plaguing both her and her young son. She is, in a way, the poster child for the deadly ambiguity inherent in the chronic nature of the threats posed by recombinant-DNA foods and their evil twin, the herbicide RoundUp: the connection is so non-immediate and so widespread that people don't recognize it.After much searching, she discovers an allergy to corn, and does an excellent job of showing how stunningly difficult it is to avoid corn products. Only later does she realize that it isn't the corn so much as it is the fact that almost all corn is GMO. But once that connection is made, she embarks on a quest to find out more about GMOs.The subtitle of her book indicates her position on the GMO issue by the time she reaches the end of her quest. But she goes to great lengths to demonstrate her open mind on the subject, and emphasizes her ambivalence about it as she talks to people involved on both sides of the issue, explicitly finding it hard to avoid being swayed to whichever side was taken by the latest person she's talked to. It's a fascinating dance to watch, and (I admit) frustrating for someone as polarized on the subject as I am. It's undoubtedly one of the great strengths of the book -- an ambivalence that will be recognizable to many readers coming on the topic for the first time.A related strength is her ability to get inside the perspective of the people she talks with, seeing the issue from their side. She does the most outstanding job of this with Zach Hunnicutt, a Nebraska corn farmer, a salt-of-the-earth true believer in GE corn (who later begins to hedge his bets). She brings who he is as a person fully to the fore as she gets to know him, riding in his tractor, and talking with him for hours. The same is true for Dave Murphy and his wife Lisa, Iowa-based activists running the organization FoodDemocracyNow! [http://fooddemocracynow.org], and, to a slightly lesser extent, a number of other scientists, farmers, and activists. There's a real sense here of personal involvement and drama, which isn't so widely the case in the books to which I'm more accustomed and attuned.Another powerful section of the book concerns an issue totally new to me -- the threat of GMOs to honey, both to the bees themselves and to the livelihood of bee-keepers. It epitomizes the all-too-common economic threat posed by GMOs, in which farmers who are not growing GMOs can lose large chunks of the international market when countries that reject GMOs find GMO contamination in those farmers' exports.Ms. Shetterly raises aspects of the larger GMO issue throughout the book, and frequently fleshes these out with good footnotes. But for someone like me, having these woven into all the personal aspects of the story makes them somehow less accessible and less connected, and thus less memorable, particularly in the absence of an index.I missed some of the historical people and aspects of the issue that seem to me essential to understanding the GMO saga, though without an index I can't know for sure if that's just due to a poor memory. (And in any case, there is only so much an author can cram into a book.) These include:a) British researcher Armand Pusztai, one of the first to stumble on the health problem of GMO foods and to have his career instantly demolished as a result;b) author Jeffrey Smith (Seeds of Deception), whose work has increased GMO awareness around the world;c) British genetic engineer Michael Antoniou (GMO Myths and Truths), whose work with proteomics has clearly demonstrated the significant difference and attendant risks between GMO and non-GMO plants in their metabolism and content;d) a clear description of the recombinant-DNA process and the details of why it is so dangerous;e) the 1989 GMO tryptophan-caused epidemic that killed hundreds and injured thousands and gives the lie to the "GMOs never hurt anyone" myth, andf) the fraud and illegality documented by Stephen Drucker (Altered Genes, Twisted Truth) in both the history of genetic engineering and the FDA's 1992 declaration of GMOs as "substantially equivalent" to other foods.Despite these reservations, I think the book is important for all those curious or concerned about GMOs. It has something for everyone. For newcomers, it is a "soft-landing" but thorough-enough entry into the issue. For hard-liners like me, it is a wonderful peek into the lives of people we've heard of (and not) on both sides. For pro-GMO people, one would hope its attempt at balance might give them a bit better sense of why their opponents are concerned about GMOs. Though perhaps that's asking too much...

Good information. it wouldn't be the only book you'd want to read on GMOs. but that is with anything. Multiple sources of information are important when reading or research on a topic.

Scientific facts are way more heavier than personal narratives. I don't know. It's just not my dish.

For anyone needing definition on GMO's - read this book. It's incredible and enlightening. Should be required material in every University in the USA.

When I first picked up this book, I had high hopes for it, despite the somewhat phony title. The book started off with a reasonable premise of the author's own struggle with her health, and its subsequent possible link to GMO corn consumption.Overall, the only good message in the book is that it is unclear whether GMOs themselves can be harmful, or whether it's the pesticides, and there is no definitive unbiased research behind it. However, the book lacks a single focus. It almost feels like there was not enough material about GMO corn, so a section about honey had to be added to make enough text for a book.Additionally, while the personal story added some credibility in the first couple pages, the book became progressively more personal towards the end, to the point of inappropriateness. To list just a few examples, the author frequently lists recipes. This is not a cookbook, why are there recipes? She includes random sketches, which are sometimes cute, but sometimes (such as the computer that some guy she met learned programming on) completely unrelated to the subject of the book. Somewhere in the middle there are a couple pages describing people pooping on her flight to Italy. Again, this may be funny, but it is simply a distraction from the topic. Closer to the end of the book she says that her husband and she "started trying for a second child" (do I need to know this?), which culminates in her admitting she does not know when her ovulation is (and she does not even dare to use the word itself), and saying that her husband and she "did some exploring" (because the reader really needs to know she had sex with her husband). The author doesn't seem to like any of the people she interviewed, and subtly undermines them by saying things like "Lisa was wearing a clean T-shirt" (does that mean she usually wears a dirty one?), or starting the description of FDN! by describing the type of luxury vehicles they own. She seems to think that everybody has some ulterior motives or double standards. There are several unsubstantiated claims in the book, such as the amount of neonicotinoid needed to kill a fly being higher than that to kill a rat. I did some research, and could not find any evidence for this claim, either in absolute or relative values. There is no footnote to cite the source. When she does cite some research, she does it in an extremely vague way, such as saying "Researchers in Massachusetts have found that in every hive affected by CCD, there is neonicotinoid residue" without providing the source of the study or saying that the residue was never found in non-CCD hives. I was able to find the study on Harvard's website, but she should have just provided a link. The author actually mentions the same study again later in the book, and the second time she does say it was done at Harvard. As I discovered after reading footnote 71, the footnotes do not contain any references to confirm her claims. The book goes "While we wait for more evidence, the most devastatingly enormous losses due to CCD are being suffered by American migratory bee colonies—in other words, those bees that are physically transported around the country to pollinate crops (they are the migrant workers we may never even think about, who have no rights or voice, and yet, like other migrant workers, are imperative to our food economy)." This is a pretty strong claim about migrant workers, and I was curious to see what was in the footnote. It turned out to be some random thoughts about watching videos of transporting bees on YouTube. I wasn't impressed.By this point, the author had lost any credibility she may have had at the beginning. While I do understand it is not a scientific paper, it cannot just claim arbitrary things out of the blue and not provide any sources. Finally, the author does not know what "doldrums" means. Apparently, she was "sitting in the doldrums of the Parliament," which I found enormously entertaining.

Still reading. Hard to hear this information, but so important!

I am in favor of labeling GMO food products. I believe in the right of the consumer to make her or his own choice. With that said, I found myself wincing a bit too often after reading Modified: GMOs and the Threat to Our Food, Our Land, Our Future, by Caitlin Shetterly. Here's what I didn't like. Shetterly applied her investigative talents unevenly when reporting on the GMO issue. For example, she tried to get the reader to understand the people behind the anti-GMO movement, but when talking with the pro-GMO people, she seemed to focus more on the connection between them and industry. There was an undercurrent of fear as she worried that she was being monitored or followed by GMO proponents. And frankly, she wasn't very critical of scientists who agreed with her, but was very critical of those who were.I am a big Rachel Carson fan, and I think that Shetterly's continual reference to Carson and her influence insinuated that Shetterly was forging a similar path in regards to GMOs. However, Carson was influential because she got the science right. There were no chinks in Silent Spring for the pesticide industry to tear down her arguments.I kept thinking about the concept of "confirmation bias" throughout...

Beautiful!!! I love, love, LOVED this book! At the heart of this story is the question: Do you believe? Do you believe in happiness? Do you believe in the supernatural? Do you believe in same-sex relationships? It’s all there. Gosh, this book was such a beautiful exploration of all of those questions. As always, KA Moll has given me hope for a brighter and love-filled future. She has encouraged me as a reader to be gentle with myself without shoving philosophy down my throat. She has gently re-opened my mind to another possibility where even I could be happy. Just as Anna and Gabe both found out. This story becomes a story not just about love lost or love found, or a house, or a haunting, but it becomes a story about the fight for the soul and how what we focus on can change our outward perception so much that we can fully embrace the darkness within us, thinking that it’s all there is. It’s a fight between good and evil and how we can find light in the most unlikely places. And it’s a lesson in how different isn’t always evil or malicious. There is so much hope in this book! And it's super well-written to boot. I see myself re-reading it very soon. Do yourself a favor, read it. Yet another hit for a talented author whose power of story-telling is as addictive as it is engaging! Loved it. All of it. Every. Single. Bit of it!

This is the third book i have purchased by the author KA Moll, and is my favorite. All her books contain tough subject matter, making it stand out from all the cookie cutter type of romance novels. This particular book was one of my favorites since it contains paranormal themes, which is my preference. I read this book in one sitting, i really wanted to know more about the characters Gabe and Anna, so i dedicated an afternoon to read. My only problem with this book was it didn't really address how Anna really dealt with her "religion" issues, and they seemed to be a doozy. Both main characters had some heavy issues to deal with, but it seemed only Gabe dealt with hers (even though it was alluded to that Anna dealt with them with Zane, a previous character from a previous book- who i was happy to see again). I was actually surprised the book ended as quickly as it did, because i was waiting for Anna to discuss her religious issues more. And i also was waiting for Gabe to "awaken" Anna's gift, and i was a little bit disappointed when they finally had sex and didn't explore the "sensitivity" aspects (would have really had made the sex scenes hotter lol). Other than that, i can't wait for KA Moll's next novel, i'll be purchasing it.

Don't pass this by! It is a beautiful, astonishing story that has many layers. I loved Moll's book "Soul Mates," and this is just as fine, if not even better. Her gift of characterization is vast, and you reluctantly end the book feeling like these characters are now part of your own life. The plot is brilliant, well-paced, and resolved elegantly. I read it in one day, almost missing the stop on my evening commute because I was so engrossed in the final pages. A wonderful, rich book from a writer one hopes will deliver many, many more.

Gabe was devastated for years after her wife died. She needs to move forward and leave the past behind but she suffer from a major depression. Anna needed the guidance of her friends and specially the eye-opening advice of Zane. She must face her fears of loving a woman and in the meantime learning the truth. She feels imperfect and thinks there isn't anyone who would really want her. There is chemistry but they just have to overcome the everrecurring obstacles. You get a demon seeking to destroy, a lot of twists and turns, a house that has more to it than furniture. This story hit some interesting issues, the characters were well drawn and once again, the story line pulls you in from page one and keeps you reading. It was an excellent story with a romance that makes you happy. Highly recommended.

I would highly recommend this book for a multitude of reasons all of which you will just have to read for yourself to find out. I really enjoyed the characters and the subject matter of this book. It ended much too soon with some loose ends but perhaps they will be seen again at some point in the future. One can always hope, right? Thank you KA for sharing Haunting Love with us.

I listened to KA Moll's Haunting Love on the way to the lake and then finished it after I arrived. WHAT A TREAT! Of course, I love Emily Beresford! And the story. Oh my, the story! Lots of butterflies and crazy religion...just what a good lesfic story needs. Thank you, KA Moll for entertaining me on my drive.

I enjoyed they true diversity of the characters of this book! I've enjoyed the other books by this author but this one was different. It was an interesting premise and one not too far fetched at that. The characters were well developed and it was nice to see Zane and Jaina again in this story. Well done!

I love KA Moll's writing. But honestly, this book couldn't keep my interest. To be honest, I don't normally read books w/ Paranormal plot lines. I was looking forward to reading more about Zane and Jaina and their family and friends. I wasn't expecting haunted houses and haunted cars.

This is real colloquial Palestinian Arabic. Very helpful.

Bought this book to speak to my good friends mother when she came to the US. She was very pleased and asked where I learned to speak so quickly and correctly. I showed her this book and she was extremely impressed.

Interesting way to learn the Palestinian Arabic dialect. I purchased it and I love it, already read it a few times.

as Arabic tutor I thought this book would be helpful, it's not categorised well enough.

Great series in a wide number of languages, making sense out of conversation. A wonderful way to build vocabulary in a language as actually spoken!

The best Dictionary for conversational use that I have ever come across. Practical and well researched it is averitable linguistic window unto Palestinian Arabic. An excellent and enjoyable dictionary.

Unique book, it was extremely benificial during my tour to Israel and the West Bank. For those who wish to learn spoken Arabic of the Holy Land, I urge you to buy this book.
