I wish I had this book about 10 years ago. I think it would've helped me look at money differently and start the process to financial freedom. This book is very well written/easy to read and offers a lot of insight on how things work behind the scenes. I'm reading the book for a second time to digest some of the knowledge I missed the first time. The book changes your mindset and approach to unlocking financial freedom.

It gave me more insight into the era during which my father, too, performed, but as a ballroom dancer ("Dancing in the Stars: Carroll Webster, International Luminary of Vaudeville and Hollywood"). I know that my father met the brothers, and after reading this book I feel as if I, too, knew them. Thank you.

Without watching YouTube videos of the Nicholas Brother dancing in all the movies described by the author, I would not have been able to make sense of Brotherhood in Rhythm. I should have known that a book on dancing is an oxymoron.

"Brotherhood" met all of my expectations. The writing is excellent, the narrative is easy reading, and the story of the Nicholas family is well researched. It is loaded with historical tidbits, laced with little known facts, and interesting behind the scenes coverage. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only troublesome thing for me had nothing to do with the book itself; it is truth-telling at its finest. Here is my problem: The acrobatic, creative, energetic, stylish, classy, graceful dancing of the Nicholas Brothers was stymied only by racism, not by their enormous ability. All the more a reason to celebrate their capacity to be creative and to joyfully dance in the face of systemic racial prejudice.

I ordered this book to help in the writing of a research paper on the career of the Nicholas Brothers. It is an astonishingly brilliant piece of work. Not only does it provide an intelligent and empathetic look at the lives and careers of the Nicholas Brothers themselves, but it also weaves in insightful narratives about the various intersecting traditions of which the Nicholas Brothers were a part. If you are looking for a panoramic and scholarly understanding of the history of black tap dancing in America, as well as an incredibly detailed and informed examination of the Nicholas Brothers, this is a wonderful book.

A great history of old Hollywood and jazz dance.

If you're a fan of the Nicholas Brothers or tap dancing or musical films of the thirties and forties, you will enjoy this book. A superb review of their career. Worthy of the extraordinary talent of the subjects.

I haven't finished reading it but so far it is great. The Nicholas Brothers were the greatest Jazz Tap Dancers that ever were or ever will be.

I would recommend purchasing Ms. Hill's treatise on the dance and historic origins of the Nicholas Brothers' dance styles and choreography. However, those who seek a detailed biography will be disappointed, as this book was aimed to be a scholarly work, not a biographical one. The book has little mention of their personal life, marriages, divorces, activities apart and completely ignored many foreign films they made in the 1950's. Harold's marriage to Dorothy Dandridge is mentioned only in passing, and his extensive career in Paris for a decade was only lightly researched. No personal family interviews were apparently done. Although excellent as a dance resource, those seeking a more well-rounded insight on the personality and life of these two genious entertainers will be better served by a biography, which Ms. Hill's book does not aim to be. It will make a great companion work to a still much-needed in-depth look at their lives.

This first book in the series, in my opinion, starts out at an astoundingly high quality level - the writing, the characters, the pacing, all the tangles of hints that impel you to keep reading just to find out what the heck is going on here. Great stuff! I was especially interested in what looked like it was going to be (at least in part) a right-on-the-money story about the lives and minds of Third Culture Kids (diplomatic corps kids / military brats / "global nomad" kids). But, by the middle of this book, that top-notch beginning started to deteriorate. The internationally diverse kids we're introduced to, the peculiar maturities, sensitivities, demands, and difficulties of their existence, the ever-present threat of significant change and uprooting, the unusual sociologies and coping methods they develop to survive, all of these get less and less part of the story as the plot shifts. As other reviewers have pointed out, a book that begins at a sophisticated level, suitable for mature adolescents and more-than-just-young adults, slips increasingly toward the kids-can-do-incredibly-dangerous-adult-things type of fantasy that is meant for younger readers.But that's disturbing, I think, for an important reason. What follows is written for adults who might be considering whether to give this book as a gift to a kid in your life: As the story focuses more and more on the search for a murderer by a girl who has been under psychiatric care for some three years, is still supposed to be taking psychiatric meds, and is therefore known to be emotionally fragile, if not unstable, I question the wisdom of telling young readers a story that is based on the premise that Grace's adult family members are so stupid, negligent, and have made such horrendous, clueless, or self-centered decisions that they have not only participated in destroying her mental health, but have now tossed her into a demanding, complex situation where she has neither continuity of support nor intelligent, caring supervision. These supposedly-adult decision-makers know full well that Grace is seriously traumatized. They know she has been obsessed by the memory of a man who looks exactly like a man she will surely encounter in Adria. So telling young readers, in effect, that their adult family members might not only drive them into psychiatric illness, but might also abandon them - at age 16 - into the "non-care" of two, thoroughly-incompetent strangers (Grace's grandfather and his secretary are truly strangers to this girl, and to even barely-adequate parenting) ... well, this is not a great set of messages, especially not for any young reader: This book normalizes family neglect, abuse, and abandonment. For this reason alone, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.Will I buy the books in this series for my granddaughters? No. Would I have bought the entire series for them if the storyline hadn't gone in such a disturbing, irresponsible direction? Almost certainly, especially if the quality of the writing had stayed as high as it was at the beginning. Too bad.

I just finished this book last night in one go. I've never read anything by Ally Carter and this is the first in her Embassy Row series. I am so glad that the other books in the series are already out because I plan to spend the next few nights finishing them all!!! I really could not put this book down.Grace Blakely makes for a very compelling character. The book tells you in many different ways that she is an unreliable narrator but you fall in love with Grace in such a way that you still won't believe it. The more other people say or make Grace feel that she's crazy, the less you agree with them. Grace is a beautiful disaster but she becomes our beautiful disaster when she uncovers the plot (and tries to foil it) for what might be yet another murder by a man from her dark past.Grace's battle with mental health after the tragic death of her mother are at the forefront of the book but the book doesn't wallow in it. It definitely colors her thoughts and actions. It's been three years and she can't get past it though everyone seems to wish that she would.Grace insists that her mother was murdered but everyone around her says quite the opposite. It gets to the point that Grace doesn't know who to believe or trust, herself or her grandfather, the powerful ambassador she's meant to live with while her military man father is on tour and her older brother attends West Point. She plays it a little to close to the vest because of this and that will hurt her later on in the few friendships she's able to make with the nearby embassy kids.Carter does an unbelievable job on showing us what grief and loss look like. Anyone who has ever suffered from either or suffer from anxiety or PTSD will see a bit of themselves in Grace's struggle. The problem is that while Grace is a fully formed character, the friends---her own Scooby gang--that she picks up on Embassy Row are mostly caricatures in this first book. I hope that we get to know those friends more deeply in the next books, particularly her brother's best friend Alexei, "the Russian boy next door."The book is a fast-paced race against the clock once it gets started. I highly recommend having the next book in the series See How They Run (Embassy Row, Book 2) on hand because you will be begging for more when you hit the [spoiler alert] cliffhanger at the end. I can't imagine any book that's handle grief and espionage so well.

A cis straight white woman - homemaker and homeschooler. I can't even imagine what others face.I'm just really tired of it all. Something has to change.I have three daughters and a son. What narrative about sexuality do I want them to learn? From whom do I want them to learn about it? It's important to do more than have The Talk. How do I help my kids make sense of it all? I want them to have healthy relationships. It has to be an ongoing conversation and I have to learn alongside my kids and have no fear.Sex sells. Sex permeates our society. Sex affects all our relationships - with coworkers, acquaintances, authority figures. People who see everything in black and white say just always avoid being alone with someone of the opposite sex, as if that protects everyone from abuse, assault, accusation.We need a sexual reformation in the church.I preordered the book and received a galley copy from the publisher, Convergent/Penguin Random House.

I don't know quite how to give stars to this book. I was anxious to read it and found it interesting. I was surprised at her wholesale trashing of traditional sexual values. Being one of those people who believed premarital sex was not part of God's best plan and being one with zero hangups about sex on my wedding night I don't identify with some of her rationale. I regret the grief caused by the church in the name of Christ about sex. I also regret that she didn't give more value to the joys of monogamous, faithful sex. I think she bends scripture to fit her view that any kind of sex that doesn't hurt someone else is just fine. This is the third book by Nadia Bolz Weber that I have read. I personally find no value added by her vulgar language. I can't get away from Ephesians 4:29 -- Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. (NLT)

Was home from work sick today and my healing came in the mail, read it in one sitting. This book *so* needed to be written. So somehow she manages not to bitch-slap the old guard church's screwed up views and teachings human sexuality (and a host of other issues addressed in her book), which, honestly, they freaking deserve. Instead, in the final chapter appropriately called "Benediction", she flings the doors of mercy wide open:"If the gospel is where we find healing from the harm done to us by the messages of the church, then it must also be where we find freedom. Meaning that even if it is the last thing I want to do, I absolutely have to believe the Gospel is powerful enough, transgressive enough, beautiful enough to heal not only the ones who have been hurt but also those who have done the hurting."She goes on to ask us to really look at each other on opposing sides: "Do we *see* them? Do we see the ways in which they were in all likelihood trying to be faithful? Do we see the ways in which we, too, may have inadvertently, in our own desire to be faithful, hurt others? I hate that this is God's economy. That the salvation of my enemy is tied up in my own. Which is why I sometimes say that the Gospel is like, the *worst* good news I've ever heard in my life."It's time to burn all our secret shame (your body, looks, sexuality, etc.) on little Post-it notes like her church did after a service. Nadia Bolz-Weber's book Shameless, exposes the churches lack of understanding how God created sex to be a symbol of his relationship with us and our relationships with each other. She exposes the lies, the legalism that has been perpetuated since the time of the early church and talks about how human sexuality is good, not shameful or sinful but a gift of Grace to us by God to show us how we can be known by him and others in a profound and intimate way.Because of it's magick, and power, sex can be abused and misused and worshipped itself instead of bringing freedom, it brings a sense of lack and instaible desire for more. It falls short and leaves us wanting.Sex, put in the right perspective can be redeemed and bring a sexual Reformation that Nadia writes about.I recommend this book for anyone that is really into both spirituality and sexuality, and for those that want a different perspective from what they were taught in their churches.

Everything about sexual matters that rarely gets said or investigated comes up in this riveting book. I couldn’t put it down. It was a tonic for a soul recently besieged by stale and cruel and unthinking Christians and their sad old unkind words. Here is a woman —-a mother and a pastor, with God given energized ministries to serve and comfort and to lead— doing a damned hard job and doing it so brilliantly it seemed easy.
