It is one of the strangeness of modern culture that our live presumes the benefits of science, without being literate in science. Gleiser provides a passionate history of science which makes it possible for a lay person to participate in the adventure of scientific understaning. He places the story of science in the context of the human story, so that science is conceived of in a humanistic and even spiritual manner. It is an enjoyable read. Michael Tan Creti

What I most appreciate is the fact that the writer is honest about the fact that science does not have answers to everything, at least until now.

Excellantly written (and edited) book.

Awesome and I truly loved this product!!!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about Physics, but presented in a way that is easy to understand and helps to make some sense of understanding the various viewpoints of creation and life - and even the meaning of life.

Marcelo Gleiser has the rare gift of explaining with the needed extention and profoundness - in understandable terms and texts for the common interested people - physics and its interest to our lives. The texts are written in agreeable and simple manner, based on his large knowledge of the science, history, philosophy and myths.Highly recommended!

The Dancing UniverseFrom Creation Myths to the Big BangBy Marcelo GleiserBook ReviewBy Richard Edward NobleMarcelo Gleiser is a scientist and a professor of Physics and astronomy at Dartmouth College. He also dabbles in theoretical Cosmology and speculative particle physics. He was born in Brazil and lives in New Hampshire. He is a great writer and "translator" of the scientific class and their "jargon."Professor Gleiser begins this work with a brief review of some ancient myths concerning the origins of this Universe. He divides these myths into "Creation Myths" and "No-Creation Myths."The Creation Myths imply a beginning to the Universe and lead the reader into the notions of God, theology, religion, mysticism etc.The No-Creation Myths are those that imply that the Universe always was and always will be in one shape, form or another - more Hindu or Buddhist or A-theistic than Judao-Christian.He then gets into Philosophy and the ancient Greeks. This is a prime area of interest to me and I always enjoy refreshing my memory in this area. This book is basically a synopsis of the evolution of what we call "science."We begin with the ancient myths, then proceed to the Greek and Roman philosophers as we explore the root thoughts on the possible answers as to how we have this universe around us. We explore all the early suggestions with professor Gleiser as our guide and interpreter.I have decided to use this book as my workbook on improving my knowledge of the evolution of cosmological thought.I have already started looking up each and every name brought forward by the professor and have been reading and researching more about each of them. The professor tells us briefly what each has to say and the value of their contribution. But this subject interests me and I would like to know more.I have now read and reviewed two books by Professor Gleiser "A Tear at the Edge of Creation" and this one. I have enjoyed both immensely. The author deals with and discusses religious and theological thoughts and its influences on this subject but make no mistake, this is a "secular" work and in no way a defense of any religious point of view."How necessary is this separation between science and religion? Very. It serves as a protective device against subjectivism in the practice of science, insuring that it remains a common language in a very diverse community. The scientific discourse is, and should be, devoid of any theological content. Invoking religion to fill in the gaps of our scientific understanding today is, in my view, an anti-scientific attitude. If there are gaps in our knowledge (and there are plenty of them!) we should try to fill them with more science and not with theological speculation."He makes this distinction clear throughout the book. The book and the Professor should stimulate any reader in deeper thoughts.A few of my thoughts:1) It is becoming more and more clear to me how science is so easily spun back into religion and mysticism. Cosmology, for example, is so very speculative and hypothetical that the door to Voo-doo is left wide open.2) The science of light ... it is a big problem but very interesting area for more research on my part.3) Newton posited God and His invisible hand in the regulation of the Universe to solve his problem with motion and other discrepancies in his theory of gravity. God supposedly threw the initial stars and planets into the sky. Einstein has a similar problem trying to justify his theory's shortcomings - the cosmological constant. And now we have Hubble's Constant. All of which points out the hidden personal agenda of even the supposed objective scientists. Readers therefore must always be critical of whatever and whoever they are reading. Skepticism comes with the territory.4) I feel even Professor Gleiser may have his own deity and Cosmological constant permeating his blanket acceptance of the Big Bang Theory. I still haven't bought the idea.5) Unlike Stephen Hawking who stated that Philosophy is dead, professor Gleiser gives due credit to Philosophy and blends the Philosophers into his story. A much more realistic and historically accurate point of view in my opinion.6) Page 306: "Nothingness": "However what is meant by nothingness here, as well as in all other examples of quantum creation of the Universe that followed Tryon's inspiring idea must be understood in terms of "quantum mechanical nothingness" and not absolute nothingness as in complete emptiness." FINALLY someone addresses this issue. Bottom line the Universe did not and could not have started from "nothing" as defined philosophically. This has been driving me nuts for years. I have already ordered this author's other work. It has been a long time since I have been so involved in a book as to write in the margins. But I did with this one.The Dancing Universe (re: Ocillating Universe - expanding/contracting) is written for the non-scientist and I must repeat, the author does a wonderful job in this respect. Although much of science/math is above my head, this author is able to bring these lofty concepts and thoughts down to my level. He knows how to talk to the regular guy. He has a third book, The Prophet and the Astronomer - A Scientific Journey. It is on my list. This is a wonderful, wonderful book, for the science student and amateur, scientific explorer. The Hobo Philosopher, Richard Edward Noble is the author of: "That Old Gang of Mine."

Starting with ancient myths, going across the history of philosophical/physical science to our present day, Marcelo Gleiser demonstrates how there is a common language and purpose uniting human thought. There is no sense in maintaining a bi-polarity, a separation between spiritual and scientific inquiries. The quest for the Absolute Reality transcends the distinction between religion and science and each one serves as inspiration for the other. This becomes evident in the arena of the origins of the universe where there is a link between ancient myths and modern cosmology. Mysticism has been a source of inspiration for many scientists and the concept of a "cold, materialist" scientist is totally out of context.Marcelo Gleiser dedicates an extensive chapter on the Greeks, continues his journey into neo-Platonism during the Middle Ages, Copernican revolution, Galileo, Newton, all the way to present optics, thermodynamics, relativity and quantum mechanics. The closer he moves into contemporary science the more technical his language becomes, but overall it is quite an accessible reading which does not require substantial background in major scientific developments. For the author the beauty of science is that it brings us closer to nature; it would be a benefit to each and everyone if science were to be taught with a less emphasis on its cold, rational, "operative" objective. Gleiser also explains how we are slaves to our rational mechanisms (language fails to fully explain the quantum phenomena), how our finite brain attempts to reach the infinite and trascend our bipolar reality.Marcelo Gleiser draws a parallel between myths of creation and cosmological models for the origins of the universe, classifying them into temporal myths with the corresponding theories of the Big-bang or Lemaitre primordial atom, and "atemporal" myths and the corresponding models proposed by Bondi, Gold and Hoyle, or the "Phoenix Universe." He makes use of an informal narrative, with an outspoken enthusiasm, removing the aura circumscribing physics and physicits. In the process he sacrifices technicality for the benefit of a wider scope of readers.

Review

I love your book! I never knew how much fun logic was until I read your book. P.S. I am 12 years old. --Paul Muenster, studentI'm always delighted when two sides that seem mutually opposed come together in harmonious agreement. I'm even more delighted when I've taken one of those sides. In this case, I write of the efforts of Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn, brothers from Iowa who advocate homeschooling and create educational materials from a Christian worldview. The fruit of the latest Bluedorn effort is a short text, The Fallacy Detective, designed to be a primer in logic for older children, specifically homeschooled Christian children, though the book is intended for anyone who wants to explore the subject. . . . I find it wonderful that the Bluedorns, among others, are actively reinvigorating the religious world with a healthy dose of independent thought . . . --Andrew C. Thomas, The Tech (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)My family and I are really enjoying your book. Even my youngest son, who is eight, enjoys attempting to answer the questions. Your book was a great introduction to another program that I had purchased. Going directly into that program probably would have bored my children to tears but now they are interested in the concepts of logic. My children became instantly attracted to the program because of the the comic segments but later couldn't put it down. --LaVera, MD, parent

Great review of logical fallacies with good examples of each of the fallacies described. If you aren't familiar with logical fallacies, read this book and you may never look at news and politics the same again. See how easy it is to jump to bad conclusions by biting on a fallacy dangled before you like a worm on a hook.

I got this book for a little extra work for my homeschooled 8th grader. He began it at the beginning of the school year. Doing a couple lessons a week, he has nearly completed it.He has found it enjoyable, and never complains about doing the lesson. He is definitely learning, too. He has told me when I'm using one of these fallacies. I think his favorite is the red herring. Or, maybe I'm more susceptible to using that one! This book is a great introduction to logical fallacies. The author makes the point in the introduction that the book covers a very small subset of logic. But, it is a great start. I find that many people have not learned critical thinking skills. Reading this book, and working through the exercises, is giving my son a good start to learning those skills.

In the story "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" the Professor is trying to help Lucy solve a problem using logic and reasoning. When she acts like that train of thought is new to her, he makes the comment, "What do they teach children in schools these days?" That is how you will feel when you read this book. My seventh grader has it as required reading for a class I enrolled him in and this should really be taught in schools. Every child needs to know how to reason logically and how to detect fallacious reasoning in advertising, debates and rhetoric. This is a skill we need daily in our media saturated culture. Whether you are in junior high or a grown adult you will find this an enriching read.

I enjoyed reading through this book with my daughter's as a great intro to logical fallacies. The author's examples and humor made this new subject understandable and fun. We gained confidence in recognizing bad reasoning in our everyday lives thanks to this easy to read book. As a homeschool parent, I especially appreciated the review at the end of each chapter which helped keep the fallacies fresh in our minds. We have been inspired to dig deeper into logic.

Nothing is more important than teaching children logic and economics. The latter finds a sound foundation on the former.

I am so glad my daughter had this as part of her homeschool regimen via Amblesideonline, org.I think this is very valuable information for people living in this media driven world. It is important to know when people are trying to manipulate you, for whatever reason.

My 5th grader was drawn to this book, though I bought it for my 7th grader. It is attractively arranged, with illustrations which draws the reader.

My two sons (ages 13 and 14) loved this curriculum and it made it easy for them to learn what fallacies are all about. I highly recommend.

I purchased this for a Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land and started reading the sections we were scheduled to visit. When I read the author's opinion that the Holy Family stayed in Bethlehem with Joseph's parents, I raised my eyebrows, but when I next read that "Joseph was therefore a stonemason..." (page 35), I decided to trash the book. If the rest of the book portray's the author's opinion (based on his own private revelation, maybe?) as fact, it is, at best, misleading. Some people would say heresy. Don't waste your money on this if you are a bible-loving Christian.

This is a small book and easily fits in a purse. That does mean that the font is on the small side. It has photos and maps and gives concise history and background of all the sites so it is good to take along on your tour. It does NOT contain any info about hotels, restaurants, etc.

For people touring Israel, or just wanting information about various Biblical sites, this is a very helpful resource. Because it is designed to be carried in a pocket or a day-bag, the print is rather small. The information in this little jewel is very accurate and highly informative.

Seems very comprehensive and good. One quibble. I wish there was a larger map in the book to locate all the places mentioned.

Small and easy to carry, but full of information and details to make our tour more meaningful. Very well done!!! Really love this guide.

Nice size for travel and packed with great info for a first time traveler there.

wonderful book, I had the priviledge of going on a 2 week visit in Israel in Jan. with Dr Luker, the book is exactly what we saw and if I had read the book prior to the trip, I would have understood more of what I saw and experienced. What an awesome experience to read and to actually see the land where Jesus lived and taught. Makes the Bible so real, and made my faith and belief so much stronger.

Useful information but organized in a rather odd way for me.

I have been using HPIM as my reference book since the 15th edition. Overall it's a great book and they are getting better all the time by adding tables, charts and color that helps remembering stuff. However this new edition has some major drawbacks:1. While it seems like a good idea to make a small problems-based volume and a larger diseases-based volume, this is just not practical. Not only the larger volume is heavy and difficult to move around the desk, it is also difficult to read since pages curve very deep into binding due to the volume size.2. I am not sure how authors decided which chapters will be available only on the disk. For example, one of my favorite chapters about transfusion therapy has disappeared from the book and exists only on the disk. I find this ridiculous - every hospital-based physician deals with transfusions all the time. It is much more important for vast majority of internists to know how to manage transfusions and their complications than to be experts in Tularemia, Relapsing Polychondritis or MEN - and these chapters made it to the paper! Other examples of important chapters that can be found only on the disk are Bone Cancer, Antiviral therapy, Poisoning and drug overdose etc. etc. etc.

I am a surgeon on the alimentary tract including liver, biliary system and pancreas, so I have to be informed of the many surgical and non surgical diseases of this organs, and this book along with other books in this field is a very important source of actual information about diseases of the alimentary tract surgery. It is a book that you need to have in order to be quite informed and to keep it close to you if you wish to be a very competent profesional in every field of internal medicine.

Not up to previous editions. Not as much depth.

Did not include the features advertised, such as online access to the eChapters. Also arrived with a "For sale in India only" label on both volumes (I live in US).

I want my 18th edition back!!! Way too many e-chapters and only 10 days of access medicine? What a joke...Who wants to pop in a DVD or go online to get content when you own the physical copy of the book? Horrible. Sticking with Cecil moving forward

Great product and great seller. Came packaged correctly and no damage

My son in law was very happy with his gift, Harrison Principles of Internal Medicine upon graduation from medical school. He said he would be using these books throughout his career.

Not used too much

This is a very good book, not a great book. We just brought a puppy home and had this book ready from the time we picked him out. We hadn't had a dog in a very long time and were pretty rusty in the training department of things. Our pup is an Australian Shepherd/Collie mix and is very "mouthy". He started out by constantly biting everything he came in contact with; our hands, feet, legs, clothing, shoes, furniture, the rugs...everything. In the book the authors say to yelp loudly to get the pup to stop. In our case, this did nothing but excite our puppy to get more happy & exuberant in his biting. But we did give this a long trial period, without any success. We also tried their suggestion of getting up and leaving the room (a consequences thing). This didn't work either because the puppy then proceeded to tear the room apart in our absence! In talking about this with our vet, she instead suggested interrupting the behavior with a very mild choke hold (she demonstrated 2 such holds for us) to send the pup a strong no-bite message. She also recommended a small spray bottle of water to give him a quick squirt when the biting got out of hand and needed to be quickly interrupted. The biting WAS out of hand at this point; my husband had scratches and bloody gouges all over his forearms and hands. Yet otherwise our puppy was easygoing, happy, and very sociable when he wasn't biting and had no other behavioral problems. He slept in a crate all night long and got along well with everybody...UNTIL he started nipping and then hard play biting. We were glad to get this new info from our vet and it helped immensely. Outside of this huge issue (for us anyway), the book has some excellent things in it. I especially like the idea of using training as a way of spending time, and bonding, with a pet. Consistent ways of calling the dog, and playing with the dog, by all family members is another great suggestion to avoid puppy confusion when training. This book is a good starter book for many issues with a puppy but is not an end-all resource, in my opinion.

I had to accept the fact that I was the one who need training! If I wanted a good dog I had to be a decent trainer. It's been awhile since I've had to train puppy. I wish our other dog could have just trained the puppy-but since that wasn't going to happen I had to find a good, easily understood book. (Besides, I hadn't done a stellar job training our other dogs.) The paperbacks in pet stores don't cover all the things responsible puppy parents need to know. This book was recommended to me by my daughter. She has been a dog handler and trainer for many years for the military and now for Homeland Security...so she knows her stuff! This book is easy to follow. Chapters and specific training issues and methods are logically presented. You don't have to read the whole thing cover-to-cover before you get a puppy or immediately after you get one. I just started with the simple stuff like getting puppy to know its name, how to potty train (still working on that one,) and teaching it how to chew on appropriate things! You won't be overwhelmed by this book and it really has made puppy training easier this time!

This book changed my life-with-pup immediately and my understanding of dog training forever. It is the best-written concise manual to basic training I've ever encountered. I recommend it to anyone, even an experienced owner, who has a dog and wants to understand him better. It is divided into a set of progressive exercises and reviews, one major lesson per week. The authors briefly explain in the simplest, clearest manner possible both how to bring about a behavior---e.g., the sit or down or get-away-from-that-bottle-of-pills-that-just-spilled-onto-the-floor-and-will-kill-you-if-you-ingest-them---and why that particular method works. They explain precisely---step-by-step-- how to conduct the little exercise that will create the new behavior. The week is spent in short, repeated drills and practice of former lessons.I felt confident, once again at ease with myself and pup, by the end of page one.The basic message of the book? IT'S NOT MAGIC: dogs act from genetic, canine-specific behavioral patterns, just as human beings act from human-specific patterns. Learn those behavioral canine patterns and adapt your training to them. Then training will be easy, even fun for both owner and pup. It will be simple.I was ready for simple. I've owned rat terriers all my life. I like their zip and feistiness and sharp features. I love their spirit and admire their sharp minds. I have taken all my dogs through their basic training without instruction or classes, and I've had few problems, none that did not resolve themselves pretty quickly. And I'd just had fourteen wonderful years with the gentlest ratty I've ever known. So when The New Guy arrived, he was a mild surprise. I'd forgotten the all-teeth, all-chewing, all-running stage. The bounce. Nor was the New Guy was not the gentlest rat terrier I'd known. But we got along. He house trained quickly, learned the sit and the come and followed through on both about half the time. Not bad for a three-month-old. But soon, he began the "jump-on-her-and-lick-her-face" and the "mouth and snap at her hands and legs." One look at those little bared teeth and I called around for help, while I awaited an obedience class. Every trainer spoke of Alpha Animals and the occasional need kick or slap in order not "spoil" the dog. I'm a lifetime teacher and I'd never seen the equivalents of those recommendations work in my classrooms, but I was willing to try anything because daily The New Guy grew more defiant. I ordered recommended books and read them, marking key passages. I did things that ran against my instincts and tried some I simply could not pull off (the heel, for instance). Then finally, late on a day filled with frustration and punctuated by tiny canine teeth marks on my arm, I went to Amazon, seeking something simpler, maybe a set of progressive lessons. Something practical and simple. I wanted easy solutions, for I knew from past experience, they existed. That's how I discovered "The Puppy Primer." It is exactly what it says----a primer, a set of basic training exercises that will take a dog through his first year and teach him to become a good companion and family member, while retaining his individuality. The author is an animal behaviorist who is an active researcher, and she is also an experienced hand-on trainer, and that combination separates her approach from a lot of well-known advice givers. She understands the mind of the creature at the end of the leash and her training techniques are designed to meet the needs of the canine mind. The training exercises work exactly the way she says they will work. Exactly. They are so simple, I marvel still. They use small treats as rewards because eating is the greatest pleasure pups know and hence best reward. Couple it with lavish praise, and the pup will gradually transfer the pleasure of the treat to the praise and chest and belly rubs and link all with the behavior being taught---sit, stay, come, or other. In time, the pup comes to see the behavior itself as pleasurable and seek out that pleasure. My pup and I are not to the heel command yet, but I think that lesson illustrates the superiority of this book's method of training. The other books I've read start this exercise with the dog on leash. The authors do not start with leash. They begin with a set of preliminary exercises that reward the dog for following closely the feet of trainer. Ingenious and simple. Then they move to the leash, recommend chest "halter" at first because it is less likely to harm the head or neck. Then they build on the already-present skills taught in the preliminary exercises to teach the dog to heel. Such an approach just makes sense. As a teacher and student I learned two important things: one will never (possibly can never) learn from someone who he believes does not like him and a teacher cannot teach a student whose motivations and being she does not understand. We cannot beat or frighten or harry any student into learning. This understanding lies at the heart of "The Puppy Primer and accounts for its successful teaching. In fact, were I teaching pedagogy in an education school, I would assign this book as required reading. It would teach the importance of addressing human needs, the value of exercises that prepare students for mastering a skill, the value of rewards besides grades, and the great pleasure of teaching and learning that can bind student and teacher. This little book is witty, clear, engaging, and right. I will give it to the dog owners I know. And I shall always be grateful to it for helping me reach my pup before bad behaviors had become confirmed. Usually the best of anything is simple. This book is no exception. Thanks!

I don't want to over-praise this. No one can tell how much staying power 'Lost In America' will have. But here's my gut: I grew up on Hunter S. Thompson and Robert Pirsig and some quieter (and maybe better) books along the same line. This book will be remembered in the same way. Or if it isn't, it'll be like the great, obscure record you tried to get your friends to listen to way back when because you knew how good it was, and 30, 40 years on you discover there were people all across the country who heard the same thing you did.I read the whole thing in a couple of sittings. The central part of the book is about Detroit, and Buzzell writes the city so well I felt like I was there, was in it with him.Only thing is - I didn't want the book to be over so soon. I wanted to know if he went back to Detroit, what else he figured out there.Scott A.

I read this as a follow-on after taking in his Iraq book several years ago. I liked Buzzell's style and skilful use of the first-person narrative in that one, and he had the advantage of a compelling tale to tell. I really wanted to like this new book when I started reading it.Here though, he lacks the fire and urgency of the first, and I fear Buzzell is not a good enough writer (yet perhaps?) to make up for it. It suffers from a lack of direction, any sort of conclusions, characters, even short vignettes that draw the reader in, and the writer into sharper focus. I strongly suspect Buzzell, to his detriment, has read too much Bukowski and Hunter Thompson...and they are better enjoyed than emulated.I hope he keeps writing....but he needs a good editor, some writing classes, and an overall shape-up for his next attempt.

Some of the other reviews puzzle me. Some reviewer give this book a lower rating, because they don't like how much the author/persona drinks. How else can a wanderer see the struggling underside of America if he or she doesn't drink, and probably drink to excess. This is a superb book that reveals our common humanity and also shows the evolution of the author or persona. Also the authors of most good travel and wandering writing become their own persona. Paul Theroux is a prime example. If you are the kind of person who dreams of going on the road, this is a superb guide and memoir.

This was not nearly as compelling as his previous book My War. He was trying to sound like Kerouac, but instead, he sounded like a drunk loser.

Overall worth reading. I found his adventures in Detroit to be interesting. At the end of the road, it was a little too superficial. It needed another layer of analysis or character observation to make it great.

Very well written, highly recommend anything written by Colby

This is powerfully and honestly written - the kind of book Jack Kerouac would have written were he a child of the late 20th century!

Colby Buzzell gained some acclaim a few years ago for his first book "My War: Killing Time in Iraq" and now comes back with this second book.By the time we find Buzzell in "Lost in America: A Dead-End Journey", he is now out of the armed forces, married and father of a young child. Buzzell is nevertheless very restless and not knowing what to do, decides to go on a country-long road trip, inspired by Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" book, if not imitating it, in the hope of finding "himself" whatever that could mean. The majority of the book centers on two experiences/cities: Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Detroit, and in particluar the latter, which takes up most of the second half of the book. Buzzell takes up residence in a down-trotten (read: cheap) Detroit hotel, and explores the decay of the city, visiting many of the once-glorious buildings (such as the Michigan Grand Central Station) and meeting people along the way. There is nothing "spectecular" happening in this book, just tales of the life ordinary, and at that the author captures the spirit of the down-and-out people quite well. But I must also admit that after reading this book, there weren't many lasting memories of it. Pleasant reading while you are reading, no more, no less.

Yeah I really should, That would serve him right. How dare he write another book about Joe and his pet Beer Can Skippy the Magnificent and then make his reading public wait another 6 to 9 months for another book. I mean, come on Craig, your dogs need a new SUV to drive around Florida in. Get busy on the word processor and quit laying around avoiding hurricanes or whatever people in Florida do,The series and this book never fail to make me laugh and remind me of my younger days as a Marine. Heck, they are a fun read and have the spirit of Robert Heinlein's "Have Spacesuit Will Travel" They remind us that a good Space Opera can be fun and adventurous at the same time.I have 2 suggestions.1 If you are reading this review and have not read the rest of the series do so.2 If you are Craig Alanson and reading this review why are you not writing on the next 2 books you lazy yankee.

I enjoyed the book, but like with all the books after the first, I skip pass the Skippy conversations as they are redundant and lend nothing of substance to the plot. At this point we all know how any problems presented to the crew goes, problem, Skippy forecast doom, light bulb moment yada yada wash repeat. I still get a kick out of it for now but, it's beginning to wear thin, something of substance has to happen or you gotta drop it like the "Wheel of Time".

Seriously! We're 7 effing books in now, and practically nothing we stupid monkeys want to know about is being given up. Shed some more info on the origin of Skippy The Magnificent, the Elders, what's the deal with the roach motel???? C'mon Craig Alanson, you stupid meatsack, throw us an effing bone already you dumdum. All we get are Skippy and Joe insulting each other constantly. I'm wasting my time with this review... Stupid monkey. I truly hate my life, just drop me in the next star we pass, really. On top of everything else, I had to actually read this one, because that other hairless monkey, RC Bray apparently can't read more than two or three words a second.

I really enjoyed the first books in this series. They were fun and engaging This one felt formulaic and slapped together. The first third was boring and repetative repeating over and over how impossible the task before them. Through out the previousely amusing repartee between Joe Bishop and Skippy devolved into childish "you dumdum..." "No, you're a dum dum..."I'd give it only one star, but the solutions were still inventive.I Hope the next one gets a good editing and freshening before it gets pushed out. This was was rushed to publication without it.

This is the last in the Expeditionary Force series, a lengthy series following the escapades of an alien and super intelligent AI and a group of humans with whom he bonds over the previous 6 volumes and many dangerous escapes from other nasty aliens all while trying to save earth and humans. Written tongue in cheek and with one of the most amusing sets of characters, from the alien AI (often referred to as a beer can) and a self-deprecating human hero to the many other characters that populate the series. My whole family loves Skippy the AI, especially as read in Audible. I tend to read the books so I’m a huge fan of the writing and of this author who’s other books are just as easy to read and just as entertaining. I admit sometimes the technical sci- jargon gets in the way of the fi- but I’ve really enjoyed the series and would wholeheartedly recommend it. I’m a Virgo though and get bogged down occasionally in detail and the detail that annoys me about the series is that there are too many grammatical errors that make one pause for a second or throw the impact of the story. However, as that’s my only complaint and is easily remedied by the publishers it gets a full thumbs up.

This review is a general one for books 3 through 7 there may be some spoilers for earlier books, but if you arehere, you probably read them.I reviewed the first two of these books last month. This is theremainder of the series to this point. To reiterate, the basic setup of the series is that in the aftermathof the departure of the Elders, there is an ongoing, apparentlyendless, interstellar war drawing in all the known intelligent racesof the galaxy. There are two coalitions, each headed by a seniorspecies which has mastered some of the Elders' toys, with a pyramidof technologically inferior species under each senior race. Oneside is, basically, the bad guys and each species in that coalitionworks as much to screw over their supposed mentors and allies asthey do against the good guys. Unfortunately Earth got chosen tofight on this side, and we are so far down on the tech pole thatwe barely even count as cannon fodder.Sent with the UNEF to the planet Paradise by our Kristang "allies"to do essentially mall-cop level duties by evacuating Ruhar "enemy"civilians from Paradise after it changed hand from Ruhar to Kristang,US Army enlisted man Joe Bishop comes into contact with a stillfunctional (though somewhat arrogant and ADD) Elder AI he christens"Skippy" who will help Joe, and by extension, Earth if Joe will getthe (non-self-mobile) AI off of Paradise. With an unlikely team, and monkey cunning, Joe's "Merry Band ofPirates" have managed to exterminate the Kristang occupying Earth.Unfortunately it is vitally important that no race of either coalitioncome to realize that Earth is a) free & b) has a spaceship andlimited Elder tech. This leads to wilder and iffier missions tokeep the secret, and means that the UNEF on Paradise can never betold that the homeworld is OK.Two books & a novella here basically deal with the situation onParadise: _Paradise_, "Trouble On Paradise" and _Mavericks_.Basically, without ever contacting anyone on Paradise, Joe's teammust maneuver events so that the Ruhar take back the planet, becauseotherwise the Kristang will massacre the humans of UNEF as traitorousallies. With that done, a tenuous detente trending towards friendshipblossoms there (the Ruhar are basically OK guys, though there aresome jerks of course) and may lead to something new in the age oldwar. This sequence is generally well done, though the framing storyof Joe's Pirates in _Mavericks_ is a bit forced. The other books are tales of the increasingly frantic efforts by Joe'steam to keep the rest of the universe from noticing that there is anythingat all going on on Earth. This is not helped by Skippy being taken downseveral notches and dealing with species several steps higher on thetech tree. Along the way, the team gathers alarming information onthe state of the Universe, and indications that "Everything Skippy knowsmay be wrong". The final (as yet) tale deals with Joe's decision togo it alone after being a consummate team player, something that can't helpbut have major repercussions. As before, these are engaging tales full of puzzles, humor, hairbrained plans that work, hair brained plans that don't work, arrogance, humility and the continuous prospect of the end of theworld as we know it. Recommended.
