I found this book to be one of the best out on the topic, of which there are too few at present for such an important topic. The depth and breadth of place-making topics and their coverage makes this a very excellent easy-to-read-and-understand as well as a long-term reference tool. The graphics are very well done. Having recently attended a Harvard program on retail for cities and new towns and urban center given by Bob Gibbs and Terry Shook, I especially found the book right on target. I want to see more of these types of books.

In my opinion, this is a fine book which details basic current planning principles. There are many photos and many references to built projects. Case studies are a strong point of this fine book.

An excellent source of well researched information. Bohl has used excellent case studies used to illustrate the issues.Certainly a valuable read.

I was put on to this book by a professor at USF School of Architecture. It contains not only the history of placemaking but real examples of placemaking and tools in how to achieve the notion of "place." Not only is this a great resource, but it is easy to read and follow along.Highly reccomended!

I was under the impression this would have more drugs in it. Not the case. I have been using Micromedix for a while and wanted a book instead. Was a mistake, if you have not heard of micromedix, check it out. They have an app and it is fairly comprehensive. My girl friend is attending school to be a nurse anesthetist and did not find this book to be all that great (granted not really relating fields). I am currently attending school to be a Clinical Psychologist with a concentration in Neuropsychology, the book has been ok for me.

First, I have not read much about Muhammad before. I have read works on the Arab world and Islam, but nothing really on the Prophet. So, I don't have much context for evaluating how accurately this book depicts the life of Muhammad. The author, Karen Armstrong, begins by observing (Page 18): "We must approach his life in a balanced way, in order to appreciate his considerable achievements." That said, here are my reflections on this work.The story of Muhammad is little known until he began his work, trying to convince others of Allah's lessons sent to him. The Arab peninsula didn't have a single religion. Mecca was a natural center for the Arab world, because of its central role in trade. But it was a city that avoided imposing any religion on those coming to--and through--it. When Muhammad began his life's work, then, it created tensions in Mecca. The book does a fine job of illustrating his sensitivity to political realities and his patience in working to build his faith into a movement.The journal to Medina (hijrah) by his followers was another major moment. The book describes the continuing development of Islam there and his dicey use of raids on caravans to provide resources. The discussion of his (and his fellow leaders) efforts to recruit new converts is ably done.One also learns a great deal about the origins of Islam, its values, and how that religious edifice affected behavior. The author also notes how his vision of Islam does not represent much of current practice in Islam (the role of women, need for tolerance, etc.). Again, I don't know enough about the origins of Islam to judge the validity of her conclusions, but if she is right, this provides a valuable insight into how religions evolve over time.The author concludes by observing that (Page 214): "If we are to avoid catastrophe, the Muslim and Western worlds must learn not merely to tolerate but to appreciate one another." Whatever the validity of her discussions in this book, that sentiment is true indeed.

This well-written book might profitably be read in conjunction with the Quran in translation. The author portrays a very apologetic modern interpretation of the Prophet 's words and actions, however her perspective becomes predictably didactic and condescendingly biased toward that interpretation rather than engaging in any serious reflection. The author's understanding of Arabic is imperfect at best, which is not a trivial matter considering her reliance on many supposed "original" meanings for Arabic words that she contends have become distorted in the West. Regardless of their political views, or their opinion of Muhammad, I don't think this book will change anyone's mind either way.

I really enjoyed this book. It had a much more positive take on the life and political situation of Muhammad. Really interesting.

Very helpful in understanding the impact of this man's life on billions of persons throughout the world. It is unfortunate that some followers corrupt the meaning of his message but it will help non muslims to better understand the founder of such a major religion.

I bought Armstrong's book about Muhammad in 2003, after reading her short book about the history of Islam. I liked that book, as it covered the main topics about Islam quite well, so I thought I would enjoy reading her previous, longer book about the founder of that religion: Muhammad - A biography of the Prophet.In Muhammad Armstrong paints a loving and sympathetic picture of the man who created the world's second largest religion (soon probably to become the first largest). The prophet is described as a gentle and caring person who possessed charismatic skills and spiritual deepness, that succeeded to transform Arabia from pagan belief to monotheistic belief in a remarkably short period of time. Armstrong depicts Muhammad in glowing colours, even when she admits his wrongdoings. In the 8th chapter, "Holy War", Armstrong recounts the massacre and summary executions of the Jewish community in Qurayzah and apologetically describes them as "a reminder of the desparate conditions of Arabia during Muhammad's lifetime" (p. 208). She continually reminds the reader that the word "Islam" means peace and reconciliation, but some of the events described in the book (and the atrocities committed in the name of Islam in our times) leave us wondering about the application of these virtues by Muslims throughout history.Prof. Emanual Sivan, one of Israel's leading historians of Islam, wrote a review about Muhammad in Ha'aretz. He described Armstrong's book as "history soaked in rose water" and claims that the author shed all sense of criticism before writing the book and failed in distinguishing between historical facts and myths which evolved long after Muhammad died. I am no expert of Islam, but I tend to agree; I feel I know more about the life of Muhammad now, but I am left with a sense of an unbalanced view of this great man.There was one observation in the book which I liked very much. When she starts describing Muhammad's rising success as a skilled and respected politician, Armstrong mentions that the Christian world has always judged this part of the prophet's life with distrust. The Western view has traditionally seen Muhammad's political success as proof that he was an impostor using religion as a means to power. To explain this attitude, Armstrong offers the following insight:Because the Christian world is dominated by the image of the crucified Jesus, who said that his kingdom was not of this world, we tend to see failure and humiliation as the hallmark of a religious leader. We do not expect our spiritual heroes to achieve a dazzling success in mundane terms. (p. 164)

A very valuable source of information before you consider your DNA testing for personal health and especially family planning. An eye opener for considerations to use DNA testing for understanding geneology. The Kindle version I bought on May 17, 2017, compared to the audio version, has a small and insignificant gap in text on page 223 after the sentence that reads "For example, 23andMe ... two disorders with devastating health outcome." Hopefully, the book editor will correct this minor issue that does not make me return the book. Apart from the content that is very educational for me, I am especially enjoying the audio version while looking or sometimes not looking at the text. I am a very slow reader in general and especially in English, which is my second language, so another very significant benefit for me is being able to see and hear new words, English phrases, and terminology in correct pronunciation. The audio version also allows me to move through the book faster and thus better maintain continuity of my ubderstanding of this new and very challenging subject for me. In short, I am experiencing a very pleasant and illuminating activity. Many thanks to author Steven J Heine, the narrator if a different person(?), and all who contributed to this book. The enlightenment that its readers will experience will help them better handle intellectually and emotionally such challenging issues as GMO foods, personal health, family health, as well as health of our society and mankind. Well done!

A must read, book. Starts with the science of heritability and gradually adds other factors to show that DNA is not destiny

I felt that this book did a fairly decent job exposing some of the hyperbole of the DNA direct to consumer industry and its overstated claims. I experienced this myself when I uploaded my DNA to a free online program that compares it to a number of current research studies out there on genes and their links to disease. It was not uncommon to see some genes indicating high probabilities of getting something like Parkinson's later in life only to see other sections of my genome directly contradict the results. For this reason I think it is is appropriate that the FDA reigned in 23andMe.The one criticism I would give of the book is that Steve seems to spend too much time injecting his own personal and rather PC opinions into the book. Couple of examples:1. He rightly indicates that Lawrence Summer's contention that their could be a genetic component of gender aptitude is a question perhaps worthy of scholarship. However he then goes into the idea that internalization of stereotypes could lead women knowing of such an idea to under-perform. While I think that is a legitimate point and certainly interesting to be cognizant of the affects on performance that stereotypes may cause, that alone is not sufficient reason to impede scholarship. Of course Steven is a social scientist of a rather politically correct bent so he believes that it is sufficient reason to not even ask a question.2. I thought the Eugenics chapter could have been more fun if it asked bolder questions and I think contains a serious logic flaw. Steven goes into a very long explanation of the affect of environment on IQ. I think it is a valid point, though I would put it more in the realm of an "external enabling condition," that is to say environment is necessary for one to live up to their full genetic IQ potential. It is a necessary, but not sufficient condition. However Steve's real interest in the heritability of IQ is really to establish that it is polygenomic, similar to height and so many other characteristics, and therefore we can't hope to change it through Eugenics. This is clearly an incorrect premise. One need only look to what he himself refers to later in the book, the breeding of dogs for all manner of characteristics, to see that breeding for characteristics that are polygenomic is not only possible, it has already been done. He probably could have examined this in a fun manner or if he just wanted to say he finds the whole premise distasteful because it would require governments to incentivize the procreation of some over others, than he should just say that not try to couch it in a rather illogical attempt to disprove the possibility that such an effort would be successful. In fact we have no idea if it would be successful or not, because due to societies aversion to the premise it was never undertaken for long enough to prove or disprove the possibility. Human generations are a lot longer than dog generations.Aside from my occasional annoyance at the politically correct nature of the arguments, I did find the book generally enjoyable. I found the chapter on the genetics of homosexuality to be particularly interesting, though I would think that the sexual fluidity of females which he mentions but doesn't explore in any depth warrants further investigation. Anyhow... the book is a pretty quick read and I don't feel that I wasted my time in reading it. I would probably like to read something from a hard scientist written in a manner approachable to a general audience as a followup.

I like the concept that you can change your DNA destiny... it is not a death sentence if you have a problem in your DNA. Too much blah blah blah... never finished the book ...gave it to a friend😀.

I am not a pastor, but I am a pastor's wife. This book has a great format. It is written in the form of letters -- letters from younger pastors to older pastors. I think the advice given in these letters is sound. And I very much appreciate the answers that are shared. I really like the letter about Sabbath rest. I think that one is my favorite. I kind of disagree a bit with the letter about the pastor's wife's role in the church. I might wholly agree if I had very small children. My children are teenagers or grown at this time. What I kind of disagree with is that the writer said the pastor's wife is just another congregation member. And I see his point, BUT it isn't true. Every church expects a pastor's wife to have a certain role. Yes, we put husband and family first but pastors should put their spouses and families before the church too. So, it isn't any different. I think all pastors would benefit from reading this book.

This book covers a subject much needed to be covered - how to keep going in pastoral ministry through the tough time. There will be tough times. The book is written in letter form and is easy to read. It isn't a long book, but it covers the subject well.

Amazing insights from some ministry giants. Lots of great wisdom from people who know all too well the challenges of ministry. Highly recommended.

What I enjoy about this particular book, "Precalculus with Limits" is the overall curriculum 10 Chapters: (1)Functions and Graphs (2)Polynomial and Rational Functions (3)Exponential and Logarithmic Functions (4)Trigonometry (5)Analytic Trigonometry (6)Additional Topics in Trigonometry (7)Systems of Equations and Inequalities (8)Matrices and Determinants (9)Sequences, Series, and Probability (10)Topics in Analytic Geometry (11)Analytic Geometry in Three Dimensions (12)Limits and an Introduction to Calculus & Appendix A. *The last 300 pages (last four chapters) covers more Calculus topics--a great preparation before Calculus. Also this book has many real-life pictures and captions: "Why you should learn it", Historical Notes of past world mathematicians, et cetera at the beginning of each chapter which feels sentimental and gives real-life tools for STEM careers. If you've taken Trigonometry and Precalculus and you're searching to tutor or brush up on your knowledge then I highly recommend this book. A textbook is only good as its author, and Ron Larson knows how to write and teach. I wanted to take Calc, but I needed a precalc refresher, so I bought this. The problems are worked out, the diagrams are clear and altogether, and there's not too much fluff, although the design and layout is visuallyenticing. Larson has written several math books, including a calc textbook. Before buying this, I owned Swokowski's Algebra and Trig textbook, which is way too formal. I compared some chapters on how it defined certain concepts, and Larson won every time, while Swokowski buried everything in the most formal formulas x/a (a>0), f(x)= x/a(a1, a2, a3...)...which was way too rigorous and review like, and lacking in instruction.Oh, and the problem key has the answer to EVERY single problem, and there are tons of them. Very happy with this purchase!

If you are taking precalculus then buy this book(or any of the newer versions of this book). I bought this older version because of the price - great price for this version as compared to the newer version. I also found answer manual on Amazon with detailed solutions to all the problems at a cheap price. The author Professor Ron Larson has a gift of writing books. His books are better than the explanations of many teachers, This will forever change your life. It is a gateway to calculus 1 or AP Calculus AB, and calculus 2 or AP Calculus BC. . It will turn your life upside down. If you want to study engineering or physics please give up now before it is too late - start to strengthen your fundamentals. I highly recommend this book.

I really like this textbook. I bought it, so I could review algebra concepts and learn a little pre-calculus before I started an Honors Pre-Calculus course at school. This book was clear, had a lot of practice questions, and explained the applications of the topics described in the book. When I ordered this book, I thought that I would be getting the teacher's edition, which contains written solutions to each of the problems, but I received the normal student edition. For the low price, this is an excellent textbook for anyone looking to learn pre-calculus on their own or as a supplement to a school class.

I needed a new precalculus textbook to replace the one I lost and this got the job done. It still had all the pages, had minimal vandalism and the binding was still in tact. Don't buy new textbooks, buy used, the schools will replace the whole textbook line for that class within 10 years anyway and the books all look the same.

I had originally taken a precalculus course at a community college and used a different book from this one. In addition to using an inferior book, the instructor also decided to skip over trigonometry altogether. It was mainly due to this fact that I decided to pick up this book and learn trig on my own (as well as review algebra) as I entered calculus and found the need for it absolutely essential, and I'm glad I did. The book is laid out in a very reader-friendly format, which tends to be rare with mathematics textbooks. Each chapter is concise, the examples given are formatted to give a true representation of the end-of-chapter questions. Now, if only my calculus textbook was as clear and concise, I'd be in great shape. . .
