Drew Hayes's inventive mind is going strong, and the story and action sequences are entertaining. However, the editing problems go beyond his usual spelling, grammar, and word use errors. Exposition lapses into mere filler, and often repeats or contradicts itself. For example, the gamers' party is described as being poor at stealth after having stealthily infiltrated a monster's lair in the previous chapter. This problem is progressing from a minor irritant to a significant distraction from the story. Also, the author should be given a thesaurus, so that he can find a synonym for "torturous."
For book 4 in this amazing series, Drew picks up as the party is heading to Lumal. They get sidetracked along the way, like any D&D party. 😉Once again, Drew has the “real†players also making their adventures as they head for a different part of the kingdom. With Russel and his crew coming to grips with real magic.I loved this book, and I recommend the series (and Drew) every chance I get! If you want more of Drew in a weekly basis, swing by and listen to the Authors and Dragons podcast, where he GMs a misfit cast of authors attempting to play D&D.
In this book the world really gets going. We learn a bit more about the magic of the book, as well as get the Big Bad of the series going. The fights are great, the power ups are nice, the whole world is really coming together. The main bones of the book I would give a very enthusiastic 5 stars. There was one big problem. The author keeps dragging our world and the table top group with it. I would be fine if it was just a chapter or two, but it gets a lot of scenes and it just isn't that interesting.Keeping all this extra baggage going is making something good with the book into something bad - all the perspective switching. We get a new character perspective every 100 words or so. This would be fine if it was all around the main group and what they are doing. However, it also switches to the humans in our world and the characters they are playing. This adds 10 or so new perspectives that are not in line with the core story line. It was frustrating to start reading a paragraph and realize we had switched to our world or game world but a totally different party.I finally just started skimming the paragraphs when I got to them, and actually read the story with the main group. That seemed to work better.
What happens when NPC's become actual player characters? What happens when players become part of the actual game? These are still questions being answered in this installment of the Spells, Swords and Stealth series.I devoured this book the moment it hit my Kindle. This series is written in a smart, but easy to follow along way, and honestly, Drew Hayes can't write them fast enough for me.
As a person who loves plot twists, this collection of plots within plots was a wonderful respite from the cookie-cutter stories that seem to infest the fantasy genre. As an old school D&D gamer (AD&D here), I loved seeing the variety of classes actually fleshed out and given some humph. The ways that old schoolers of Notch seemed to haunt the background for the party came across as a nice callback to Greenwood’s Elminister. (Forgotten Realms)As a gamer who honestly dislikes the Paladin class, I have to hand it to Drew to actually flesh out his characters to make me rout for a paladin.Drew, before this series there was only 2 books out all the fantasy books I’ve read that actually had me liking a Paladin. You have tripled that number in a single series.Grumph was the reason I picked up book 2. Gabbie and Mr. Peppers were the reason I picked up book 3 and this one.I’ll brake with my normal dislikes and say that it is the Paladin (I can’t spell his name well) Gnome that will be the reason I pick up book 5. If for no other reason than to see if Grumph’s prediction comes true. (Nice foreshadowing there, I actually had a chill go down my back with that segment.)Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to go look into a few of your other books Drew.
Someone stop this man please! I nearly abandoned a vacation early just to start reading this installment of a great series. I'm not a gushing person so I'll just wing it here. If you at all like this or a similar genre do yourself the favor of reading this series from the first book and I'm positive you will find yourself drawn in and invested in the lives, actions, pain and joy contained in the pages. Is it magic? I don't know. That's it. I don't need to say more.Cheers!
Once again Drew Hayes hits it out of the park. Heck ,out of the stratosphere. There are so many things about Siege Tactics that will out and out astound you that you won’t recognize that you’ve had a revelation until three pages after you’ve read the words. This book is a marvel, if you’re any kind of serious gamer, this story answers questions you’ve always wanted to know. What happens when you’ve won the game? What are the meanings of the roles my characters are playing? Are Green Lanterns actually Paladins?(that last one was one of those revelations I was talking about earlier.)The characters we first met in “NPCs†are leveling up and their adventures are just as fresh and vibrant as the first book. New challenges, new skills. This is a look behind the DM screen and inside the dice. It’s a tribute to young Mr. Hayes that no matter the genre he produces real thought provoking stories that never fail to entertain.Bravo sir
A generally well conceived continuation from book 3, with concentration on two groups - NPC Adventurers and D&D real life adventurers. As usual, the NPC's drive the adventure - a visit to a hidden village, several battles, and several revelations.Though not a short book, this had the feel of a story half finished - a setup for one or more follow on books. At times the pacing was a bit slow, and battles felt like a turn based game. That said, this was an interesting book that succeeded in moving the series forward though, as mentioned, felt somewhat unfinished.
